Fillmore West is the historic rock and roll music scene in San Francisco, California that became famous under the direction of concert promoter Bill Graham from 1968-1971. Named after Graham's original "Fillmore" location at the intersection of Fillmore Street and Geary Boulevard, it stands on the southwest corner of Market Street and South Van Ness Avenue. Now there is a Honda car dealership at that location. In June 2018, the top two floors of the building will reopen as SVN West, a new concert and event venue run by Non Plus Ultra.

Histori

The Carousel Ballroom was originally a large band dance palace. Later, Fillmore West booked primarily African American artists as part of the Chitlin Circuit, before 1967. Legend Blues B.B. King played in front of his main white audience there in February 1967, with Bill Graham promoting.

The Carousel Ballroom for several months in 1968 was operated by a collective formed by Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother and the Holding Company, as a social/musical "laboratory experiment". "The six-month period may be in line with the altitude of the whole of the 60s Haight-Ashbury/San Francisco." Bill Graham then took over.

After two years at the Fillmore Auditorium, due to the deteriorating environment and simple capacity of the hall, Bill Graham moved his main concert location in July 1968 to this larger venue, which is less than a mile from the original Fillmore at 1805 Geary Boulevard. He referred to this place as Fillmore West (in contrast to Graham Fillmore East's auditorium in New York City).

Events

The Celestial Synapse is a musical event held at Fillmore West on the night of 19 February 1969. At least 3,000 people attended the event, organized by the Frontiers of Science Fellowship. The show begins with a Tibetan monk playing the Tibetan gong, and the Grateful Dead plays a set.

The Grateful Dead was among the regular cast at Filmore West, having played a total of 64 concerts from 1968 until 1971. Of those first 18 were billed under "Carousel Ballroom".

Closure

After three years, Graham closed Fillmore West on July 4, 1971 with five nights of performances featuring San Francisco bands like Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead and the last band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and a poetry reading from Allen Ginsberg. A documentary from several recent concerts, called Fillmore , and a three-disc album, called Fillmore: The Last Days , was released in 1972.

SVN West

On June 23, 2018, a Pride celebration featuring some DJs and Juanita MORE drag stars! will be held at the former concert hall on the top floor of the building now called SVN West, a new concert and event venue run by Non Plus Ultra. This event is beneficial for Trans Youth in San Francisco. This marks the first time a musical event has been held at the venue since Fillmore West closed in 1971.
