Honda in the United Kingdom
After acquiring land in the United Kingdom with its popular motorcycle ranks during the 1960s, Honda imported its first car to England in 1972, when the original Civic was launched, to be sold when a Japanese-made (especially the Nissan Model Datsun badged) in sales. The larger Accord joined the range in 1976, followed by the Prelude coupe in 1979.
In 1980, Honda entered a business with British Leyland to build Honda-based designs at BL factories. The first product of this venture was the 1981 Triumph Award, produced for three years until it was replaced by the Rover 200 Series; both cars are based on the Honda Ballade.
Meanwhile, the two companies are working together on "Project XX", first announced in 1980 as a new mid-sized luxury sedan to be launched in the mid-1980s. It evolved into the Rover 800 Series, launched in 1986, and based on Japan built Honda Legend.
Around the same time, Honda agreed to BL/Austin Rover to build a version for the United Kingdom of the Ballade saloon alongside the Rover 200 Series at Longbridge. Substitute Ballade, Concerto, also built in Longbridge, and based on the second generation Rover 200 Series.

Swindon plant
In 1985, Honda acquired the South Marston site on the north-eastern edge of Swindon. This site has been used in the Second World War for the production of aircraft by Phillips & amp; Powis and Short Brothers, and then by Vickers-Armstrongs-Supermarine; his election in 1938 took into account the presence of skilled labor at Swindon Works of the Great Western Railway.
The 370-acre site crosses the boundary between Stratton St Margaret and South Marston parishes.
HUM was established in 1985, and production at the engine plant began in 1989. In 1992, the production of the Honda Accord (which has the same design as the Rover 600 Series but different machines) started in Swindon, and a second engine line was installed. In 1994, Honda Civic production began in Swindon; in the same year, Rover Honda's business ended due to the takeover of Rover by BMW. Nevertheless, the Rover 400 Series in 1995 is based on the new Honda Civic.
In August 2000, it was revealed that the United Kingdom producing Honda cars would be exported to Japan for the first time. In the same year, the factory also started producing the CR-V SUV, which has been sold since 1997 in the UK. In September 2001, HUM opened a second car assembly plant in Swindon, creating an additional two hundred jobs at the site. In December 2001, workers at the Swindon factory chose to form a union, and were represented by the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union.
In 2002, Honda Accord production ended in Swindon, with new models imported from Japan. In October 2002, Ken Keir, managing director of HUM, stated that Honda would maintain vehicle production in the UK. This is whether he joined the Eurozone or not.
In September 2006, it was announced that Honda would hire seven hundred additional workers for the Swindon plant, and increased vehicle production at the site by 32% to 250,000. In February 2008, it was announced that Honda would make an investment of à £ 80 million in a new production facility on the Swindon site, for the manufacture of plastic car components and metal casting for machinery.
On January 30, 2009, due to the recession, which led to a fall in sales, it was announced that direct workers on the Swindon site would be dismissed for four months until June 1, with full payment for the first two months of the period and about half the payment for the rest. If the employee is in the indirect staff category or their maintenance, on the contrary, will lose about Ã, à £ 1,500 and be forced to keep working.
In October 2009, HUM began producing the Honda Jazz, which until then was imported from Japan. Jazz production in Swindon was stopped in 2014, and once again imported from Japan alone. In September 2012, Honda announced an investment program worth à £ 267 million on the Swindon website. This is to support the introduction of new Civic and CR-V models, and the new 1.6-liter diesel engine. The investment will take a total investment on the site of around £ 1.5 billion, and will increase the workforce to 3,500.
