The Honda Life is the name used in various car cars produced by Honda: passenger cars, microvans, and kei trucks. The first series of nameplate was built between 1971 and 1974, with the name revived in 1997. Honda Life is rarely marketed outside of Japan.

Generasi pertama (1971-1974)

The original Life range was offered as a two-door or four-door hatchback and in a three-door wagon model (also sold as a commercial van), replacing the Honda N III 360. Compared to the previous Honda mini series, the passenger comfort was enhanced for making it a better family car - indeed, Honda's goal is to create a lonely kei like a 1-liter car of the era. Wheelbase, at 2,080 mm (82 inches), eight cm longer than its predecessor. The entire range of Life has a water cooled engine Honda EA 356 cc, usually produce 30 PS (30 hp) at 8,000 rpm. which started as an air-cooled engine borrowed from a Honda CB450 motorcycle. The highest speed of the sedan is 105 km/h. Sprint to 100 km/h appears in 34.9 seconds in the test period. In September 1972, the tall and curious "Life Step Van" was introduced, with three or five doors. This pickup version is then added to the lineup, but has minimal impact on the market.

The engine is also fitted with a balance shaft to reduce vibration. The machine was called "purified" in the testing period, and was considered quiet and smooth like some four-cylinder engines. Changes in water-cooled engines also remove odor in heating systems that are generally associated with air-cooled engines that draw hot air into the passenger compartment. Another improvement is that the gearbox is separate from the engine, unlike in the N-series where the gearbox is on the bah (as for the original Mini). Life Production coincides with the larger Honda Civic with both vehicles introducing timing belts (instead of chains) for overhead cam operation.

This Life Version is exported to several markets such as Australia, where a four-door version (same specification as in Japanese version) enters the market in mid 1972. The two-door N360/600 goes on sale together. The Life was only produced for four years, as the Civic proved to be much more popular both in Japan and internationally, and when the decision was made to cancel Life, it ended Honda's production from a passenger to the car until 1985 , with the introduction of Honda Today. At that time, Life was  ¥ 350,000, and the Civic was  ¥ 400,000. Civic also has excess size, making the car safer in a collision.

Development
  • 1971, June 1

Life emerged as the successor to Honda N III 360. It was equipped with a newly designed two-cylinder 356 cc SOHC series, a liquid-cooled four-stroke engine equipped with a balancer shaft. For strict city usage, low rotating machines with lower compression (8.0: 1, compared to 8.8: 1 for higher-powered versions) are installed in "City of Life". For this version, which is a cost-free option across the range, engine output drops to a low of 21 PS (15 kW) at 6,500 rpm - compared to 8,000 rpm for high compression units. It also receives a three-speed transmission, which means that the maximum speed is limited to 90 km/h.

  • 1971, July 20

New, three speed, fully automatic transmission available. Unlike manuals, automatic shifters are installed in columns.

  • 1971, September 6

A commercial three-door "Van" is added, with the unique bodywork of the B-pillar back. Slightly higher than its sedan counterpart, like them, Life Van is also available with full automatic transmission.

  • 1971 October 25

Personal use version of Life Van (called "Wagon", chassis code WA ) is added, the middle price between the two and four-door sedans. It can also be equipped with three speed automatic. Van can be notified from cart with rail carriage seen through back window.

  • 1972, May 1

A sporty engine with a constant twin-speed carburetor is added, for the new "Touring" range. All two-door lineup consists of SS, SL, and GS above. Power reaches 36 PS (26 kW) at 9000 rpm, and top-of-the-line GS receives a five-speed gearbox dogleg to utilize a fully peakier machine. The Touring GS can reach a top speed of 120 km/h. On June 15th of the same year, Life received a minor facelift with a redesigned grille, and in September a four-door version of Touring appeared. Low-powered "Town" engine production also ended during 1972.

  • 1972, September 20

The Life Step Van is launched, the packaging that embodies the high wagon style is very popular for now kei .

  • 1973, August 21

The Life Pickup was released. At the same time, the sedan lineup underwent minor facelift (another new grille) and a direshuffle lineup. The auto option is now only available on one two-door and one-door four models.

  • 1974, October

In the face of a continuously contractioning Kei class combined with increasingly stringent emissions standards, Life series creation, along with Z360/600, is over. This ended the participation of Honda passenger cars, until the arrival of 1985 in Today.

Life Step Van

This Van Step type variant, which shares the chassis code VA with low-life Life V, also uses 356 cc 356 cc PSD 30-PS (22-kW) engine, two water-cooled cylinders as well as the rest of the range. At the time of its introduction, its appearance is considered a new approach, but it has some benefits because the engine is mounted in front and with front-wheel drive. The Step Van, while its loading chamber is shorter, can offer the advantages of certain interior spaces such as very low and flat floors that compete, rear-wheel vehicles can not provide at that time. It attracted much of the influence of DKW Schnellaster produced in Europe. Its appearance, though unique and unappreciated at the time, is now the standard approach for today's kei products from Japanese manufacturers. The rear gate is a clamshell style, horizontally divided. The 605 kg (1.334 Â £) Van Step, like the usual Life Van, can carry 300 kg (661 pounds) with two occupants, down to 200 kg (441 pounds) with complete two more passengers.

The van was first sold on September 20, 1972 with production ending in 1974, with an introductory price of Ã, Â ¥ 376,000 for standard Step Van and Ã, Â ¥ 403,000 for the Super DX version. The Step Van series is only available with a four-speed manual transmission. The Standard model price has crept up to 388,000 at the launch of the pickup version. A total of 17,165 vehicles were produced, with a total of less than half the 2,000 units projected per month. It can also be found on Gran Turismo 4, Gran Turismo (PSP), Gran Turismo 5 and Gran Turismo 6 videogames, as Honda Life StepVan.

Life pickup

Introduced on August 21, 1973, the Life version was designed as a pickup truck. Pickup receives chassis code PA . Although it weighs only 550 kg (1,213 pounds), Life Pickup can carry a 350 kg (772 lb) charge. Production ended in 1974, with no more than 1,132 vehicles produced, as the cabin of Honda TN7 over trucks with much longer beds proved more popular.

Generasi kedua (1997-1998)

In 1997, the Life name was raised for a small new line, front-wheel drive MPV 5-door style car, which required a redesign for 1998 due to the new Japanese taxation regulations. [1] The Life uses the Honda E07A three-cylinder engine. It replaces Honda Today and is available exclusively in Japan at Honda Primo dealers. The bodystyle appearance was introduced in response to the popularity of the Suzuki Wagon R, which found many buyers, and competed with Daihatsu Cuore, Subaru Pleo, and Mitsubishi Toppo in the "high wagon" segment of the car's kei .

It was introduced as a revision of the 1970s "StepVan" appearance, sharing the basic components of second generation Honda Today. Powertrain and chassis, interior, almost identical dimensions to Honda Today. It is a temporary model that reflects changes in the laws governing the car's kei , and due to subsequent changes in the law again, this version is only built for about a year and a half.

It used Honda E07A engine, 660 cc SOHC 3-cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder, with Honda PGM-FI as standard equipment. Transmission is a 5 speed manual transmission, or 3 speed automatic transmission.

It also includes the driver's side "SRS" airbags, ultraviolet heat-absorbing radiation glass, antibacterial steering wheel, and a selection of available anti-sleeve brake systems. The class system is the three classes of "B", "G" and "T". The use of a windshield wiper for the windshield was brought from Honda Today.
