In addition to advanced engine technology, the "10" series tractors offer many other improvements to the older two-cylinder models they replace, including significantly higher horsepower-to-weight ratios, advanced hydraulics, more comfortable and convenient operator stations, and many other improvements. These insulated cabins that include a roll-over protective structure have distinctive rounded glass and are equipped with heating and air conditioning, as well as speakers for optional radio. They offer a new 15-speed Power Shift transmission, and are available with optional mechanical front wheels that feature caster action for better traction and tighter turning radius. They also feature cosmetic upgrades, including a light brown cabin interior, not a black interior on the previous model. These tractors were followed by 55 and 60 series mechanical tractors before being replaced by the 7000 and 8000 Deere tractors completely redesigned in the early 1990s.

Use of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to prevent user repair

John Deere's license that includes internal software on a tractor control computer does not allow users to modify the software. Green Magazine is a publication devoted to John Deere fans. It started in November 1984 by Richard and Carol Hain of Bee, Nebraska.
