Vehicle registration plates , commonly referred to as number plates , are mandatory numerical or alphanumeric plates used to display vehicle registration alerts. Guernsey and Jersey Crown Dependencies are outside the UK and EU, and have different registration marks than those used in the UK.

Jersey

Standard plate

Jersey registration plates consist of the letter 'J' followed by one to six digits; plates can now incorporate the Jersey emblem on the white strip on the left, along with the 'GBJ' (Great Britain - Jersey) country identifier. The design is similar to the EU standard plates, but does not include the European flag, because Jersey is outside the EU.

Dish plate

The car rental listed in Jersey displays the silver letter 'H' on the red background to the left of the registration plate.

Prefix 'E' is used to designate temporary import.

Where the vehicle is taken temporarily to Jersey... from a country where the vehicle is not under state law that must be registered, the Inspector may... give him the identification marks to be displayed on the vehicle as specified in that paragraph The mark should consist of the letter 'E' followed by the number.

Admired dishes, having a 'JSY' format followed by one to three digits, are officially auctioned. Such is the desire of a low number registration sign often included in the auction. (New registered guard buys right to show the sign of registration rather than direct ownership of it.)

A Jersey "merchant" has a white letter with a red background and is made of flexible magnetic material. This plate is for use by a motor bona fide trader on an unregistered vehicle used in connection with the motorcycle dealer's business.

Bailiwick of Guernsey

Guernsey

Guernsey plates have been required since 1908.

Standard plate

Guernsey's plate consists of up to five digits, no letters. Plates can be silver on a black background, or black on a white/yellow background like in the UK. An oval containing the letters 'GBG' (Great Britain - Guernsey), the island's international vehicle registration code, is sometimes included.

Dish plate

The registration number 1 is provided for, and displayed on the Bailiff of Guernsey. The official Lieutenant Gov. Guernsey's car has no license plate. His private car has G1 and G2 as the registration number. Guernsey hires a black 'H' sports car on a yellow background on a separate square plate.

The most expensive plate

From 2012 some number plates starting with 0 and 00 were released to generate revenue for the island. Registration OOÃ,7 is a highly desirable dish especially for James Bond fans or "007" - the plate reaches Ã, Â £ 240,000 at an auction in September 2015.

Alderney

In Alderney, a Kingdom Self-Regulatory Self-regulation in the Channel Islands, registration was issued with the prefix 'AY' followed by a space and then 1, two, three or four digits.

Either the GBA (Alderney) or GBG (Guernsey) international identifiers may be displayed in vehicles, and this is seen in the oval format required internationally by the 1949 Geneva Conventions on Road Traffic, or on the side of the license plate, in a style similar to that used in the EEA under EU Regulation 2411/98. The latest number issued (at the end of Summer 2017) is at 3000 low (e.g. AY 3017 ).

Alderney was identified as a jurisdiction within himself in the 1926 Convention on Motor Traffic.

Prior to World War II registration was issued in the Island Hall by Island Government, Alderney State; following the banning of drivers and vehicles 1948 Agreement delegated by Alderney State to the Government of Guernsey as one of the "transferred services"; so motor vehicle registration is now issued at the Alderney State General Office in the Island Hall.

The registration certificate (known informally as a 'log book', as in Britain) was removed from Guernsey on the State of the Environment logo of Guernsey, but with the issuing authority declared as Alderney State. Because of this, international designers for Guernsey can be shown in cars instead of GBA, if liked by car owners (this is relatively rare, however).

There is no legal requirement on how Alderney's plate is made - the Alderney Street Traffic Ordinance is silent about this. Alderney dishes are generally seen as white or silver on a black background (pre-1973 English style), or black on white or yellow (pre-2001 English style letters and post 2001). One or two vehicles carrying French/yellow used French plates. Sometimes the license plate is drawn by hand, or the number is painted on the car.

Important plates

AY 1 is privately owned, as are all single-digit registrations (although some are owned by a utility company, which is a majority state-owned enterprise).

AY 999 is used for primary police cars (usually 4-wheel drive vehicles).

Some vehicle registrations correspond to the four-digit phone numbers of their respective owners (ie 44 1481 82 xxxx) - for example, a vehicle belonging to the Georgian House Hotel bears the mark AY 2471 .

Sark and Herm

Sark and Herm forbid motor vehicles other than tractors from their paths. There are no laws that require registration plates, but tractors in Sark still have to be licensed every year, evidenced by stickers displayed somewhere in the vehicle.
