Madison Square Garden , often called " MSG " or simply " The Garden ", is a multi-purpose indoor arena in New York City borough Manhattan. Located in Midtown Manhattan between 7th and 8th Avenues from 31st to 33th Streets, located above Pennsylvania Station. This is the fourth place to bear the name "Madison Square Garden"; the first two (1879 and 1890) are located in Madison Square, on East 26th Street and Madison Avenue, with Madison Square Garden third (1925) farther to the city center on Eighth Avenue and 50th Street.

The Garden is used for professional basketball and ice hockey, as well as boxing, concerts, ice shows, circuses, professional wrestling, and other sports and entertainment forms. This hotel is close to other downtown Manhattan landmarks, including Empire State Building, Koreatown and Macy's in Herald Square. It is home to the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA), and is home to New York Liberty (WNBA) from 1997 to 2017.

The Garden opened on February 11, 1968, and is the oldest oldest sports facility in the New York metropolitan area. This is the oldest arena in the National Hockey League and the second oldest arena in the National Basketball Association. In 2016, MSG is the second busiest music arena in the world in terms of ticket sales, behind The O2 Arena in London. Including two major renovations, the total construction cost of about $ 1.1 billion, and has been classified as one of the 10 most expensive stadium ever built. It is part of the Pennsylvania Plaza office and retail complex, named for the train station. Several other operating entities associated with the Park share their names.

History

Previous Garden

Madison Square was formed by the intersection of 5th Avenue and Broadway at 23rd Street in Manhattan. It was named James Madison, the fourth President of the United States.

Two places called Madison Square Garden are located in the northeast of the square, the first from 1879 to 1890, and the second from 1890 to 1925. The first park, leased to PT Barnum, has no roof and is uncomfortable to use during bad weather, so destroyed after 11 years. Madison Square Garden II was designed by renowned architect Stanford White. The new building was built by syndicates including J. P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, P. T. Barnum, Darius Mills, James Stillman and W. W. Astor. White gave them Beaux-Arts structures with Moorish shades, including tower-like towers modeled after Giralda, the bell tower of Seville Cathedral - towering 32 stories - the second tallest building in the city at the time - dominated Madison Square Park. It is 200 feet (61 m) by 485 feet (148 m), and the main hall, the largest in the world, is measured 200 feet (61 m) by 350 feet (110 m), with a permanent seat for 8,000 people and a floor space for thousands more. It has 1,200 seats of theater, a concert hall with a capacity of 1,500, the city's largest restaurant and a roof-top cabaret. The building costs $ 3 million. Madison Square Garden II was unsuccessful like the first Park, and the New York Life Insurance Company, which mortgaged mortgages, decided to tear it down in 1925 to build a new headquarters building, which would become Cass Gilbert's landmark-designing the New York Life Building.

The third Madison Square Garden opened at a new location, on 8th Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, from 1925 to 1968. Groundbreaking at the third Madison Square Garden took place on 9 January 1925. Designed by famous theater architect Thomas W. Lamb, built at a cost of $ 4 , 75 million in 249 days by boxing promoter Tex Rickard; the arena was nicknamed "The House Was Tex Built." The arena is 200 feet (61 m) by 375 feet (114 m), with seating on three levels, and a maximum capacity of 18,496 spectators for boxing.

The demolition began in 1968 after the opening of the current Park. It was completed in early 1969, and the site is now where One Worldwide Plaza is located.

Current Garden

In 1959, Graham-Paige bought a controlling stake in Madison Square Garden. In November 1960, president Graham-Paige Irving Mitchell Felt bought from the Pennsylvania Railroad right to build at Penn Station. To build a new facility, the above parts of the original Pennsylvania Station were torn down.

The new structure is one of the first of its kind to be built on the platform of an active train station. It was an engineering feat built by Robert E. McKee from El Paso, Texas. Public condemnation of the demolition of the structure of the Pennsylvania Station - a remarkable example of the Beaux-Arts architecture - led to the establishment of the New York City Landmark Conservation Commission. The place opened on 11 February 1968.

In 1972, Felt proposed moving the Knicks and Rangers to an incomplete place in the New Jersey Meadowlands, Meadowlands Sports Complex. The Garden is also the home arena for the NY Raiders/NY Golden Blades of the World Hockey Association. The Meadowlands will eventually host their own NBA and NHL teams, the New Jersey Nets and the New Jersey Devils, respectively. The New York Giants and Jets of the National Football League (NFL) also moved there. Felt's efforts sparked controversy between Parks and New York City over real estate taxes. The disagreement flared up again in 1980 when Park again challenged its tax bill. Arena, since the 1980s, has enjoyed a tax-exempt status, provided that all home games of the Knicks and Rangers must be held at MSG, not to lose this exception.

The park owner spent $ 200 million in 1991 to renovate the facility and added 89 suites in the top hundreds of seats. This project was designed by Ellerbe Becket. In 2004-2005, Cablevision fought with City of New York on the proposed West Side Stadium, which was canceled. Cablevision then announced plans to tear down the Park, replace it with high-rise commercial buildings, and build a new Garden one block away at the post office of James Farley. Meanwhile, a new project to renovate and modernize Garden completed phase one in time for the 2011-12 season of Rangers and Knicks, although vice president of Garden said he remains committed to the installation of the Penn Station extension at Farley Post Office Site. While the Knicks and Rangers did not evacuate, New York Liberty played at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey during the renovation.

Madison Square Garden is the last of the NBA and NHL arenas to not be named after a corporate sponsor.

Joe Louis Plaza

In 1984, four roads that surround the Park were designated as Joe Louis Plaza, in honor of boxer Joe Louis, who made eight successful title defense at Madison Square Garden before.

renovation 2011-2013

The second stage renovation of Madison Square Garden worth $ 1 billion occurred mainly during three offseasons. It was set to start after the 2009-10 hockey/basket season, but was postponed until after the 2010-11 season. The renovations are done in stages with most of the work done in the summer months to minimize disruptions to the NHL and NBA seasons. While Rangers and the Knicks are not displaced, Liberty play their home games through the 2013 season at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, during the renovation.

New features include larger entrances with interactive kiosks, retail, climate-controlled rooms, and broadcast studios; larger concourse; new lighting and LED video systems with HDTV; new seating; two new pedestrian sidewalks suspended from the ceiling to allow fans to look directly down into the games played below; more dining options; and repairing changing rooms, changing rooms, green spaces, upgraded roofs, and production offices. The concourse under the bowl, called Madison Concourse, stays on the 6th floor. The upper bowl concourse is moved to the 8th floor and is known as the Concourse Park. The 7th floor houses the new Madison Suites and Madison Club. The top bowl is built on top of this suite. The concourse is built wider than its predecessor, and includes large windows that offer views of city streets around the Park.

Bottom bowl construction (Phase 1) is completed for the 2011-2012 NHL season and the 2011-12 NBA season season close season. The season extension for the Park allows some further work to start in a new top bowl, which finishes on time for the 2012-2013 NBA season and NHL NHL-locked NHL 2012-13 season. This follow-up work includes a Western Balcony on the 10th floor, taking the place of the ceiling, and a new 300-level ice end seat. The construction of the top bowl along with Madison Suites and Madison Club (Phase 2) was completed for NHL and NBA season 2012-2013. The construction of a new lobby known as Chase Square, along with Chase Bridges and the new scoreboard (Phase 3) were completed for the NHL and NBA 2013-2014 seasons.

Penn Station renovation controversy

Madison Square Garden is seen as an obstacle in Penn Station's renovation and expansion of the future, which has expanded through the Post Office of James Farley, and some have proposed moving MSG to other sites in western Manhattan. On February 15, 2013, the Manhattan Community Board 5 voted 36-0 against granting updates to MSG's operating license forever and proposed a 10-year limit instead to build a new Penn Station where the arena currently stands. Manhattan District President Scott Stringer said, "Moving the arena is an important first step to improving Penn Station." Madison Square Garden Company responded by saying that "it is inappropriate to think that M.S.G. will consider moving."

In May 2013, four architectural firms - SHoP Architects, SOM, H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, and Diller Scofidio RenfroÃ, - submitted proposals for the new Penn Station. SHoP Architects recommends moving Madison Square Garden to the Morgan Postal Facility several blocks to the southwest, as well as removing 2 Penn Plaza and rebuilding another tower, and an extension from High Line to Penn Station. Meanwhile, SOM proposes moving Madison Square Garden to the area just south of Post Office James Farley, and rebuilding the area over Penn Station as a mixed-use development with commercial, residential, and recreational space. H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture wants to move the arena to a new dock in the west of Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, four blocks west of the current station/arena. Then, according to the H3 plan, four skyscrapers in each of the four corners of the new Penn Station superblock, with a roof garden above the station; Farley Post Office will be the center of education. Finally, Diller Scofidio Renfro proposes the development of mixed-use on site, with spas, theaters, cascading gardens, swimming pools and restaurants; Madison Square Garden will be moved two blocks west, next to the post office. DS F also proposes high-tech features at stations, such as railway arrival boards and departures on the floor, and applications that will inform passengers waiting for a way to fill their time until they catch the train. Madison Square Garden rejected the idea that it would be relocated, and called the "pie-in-the-sky" plan.

In June 2013, the New York City Council Committee on Land Use decides to grant Park ten-year permission, at the end of the period where the owner will have to move, or return through the permit process. On July 24, the City Council decided to grant a 10-year operating license to the Park with a voice of 47 to 1. "This is the first step in finding a new home for Madison Square Garden and building a new Penn Station that is as fabulous as New York and suitable for the century to-21, "said City Council speaker Christine Quinn. "This is an opportunity to rearrange and redevelop Penn Station as a world-class transportation destination."

In October 2014, Morgan's facility was chosen as the ideal area for Madison Square Garden to be moved, following the 2014 MAS Summit in New York City. More plans for the station were discussed. Then, in January 2016, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a redevelopment plan for Penn Station that would involve the removal of The Theater at Madison Square Garden, but would leave the arena intact.

Billy Joel, who broke the record, declared "Madison Square Garden is the center of the universe as far as I know." He has the best acoustics, the best audiences, the best reputation, and the best history of the great artists who have played there. This is a sacred rock and an iconic roll for most of the tour and, as a New Yorker, it has a special meaning to me. "

Seating

The seating at Madison Square Garden was originally set in six levels up, each with its own color. The first level, which is only available for basketball, boxing and concerts, and not for hockey games and ice shows, known as "Rotunda" ("ringside" for boxing and "basketball side"), has a beige seat, and bore part number 29 and lower (lowest number varies with different place, in some cases with lower part denoted by letter and not number). Next up is the "Orchestra" (red) seats, sections 31 to 97, followed by 100-level "First Promenade" (orange) and 200-level "Second Promenade" (yellow), 300 (green) level "First Balcony ", and Balcony" 400-level (blue). " The rainbow-colored seats were replaced with fuchsia and teal seats during the 1990s renovations (partly because the blue chairs had gained a bad reputation, especially during the game where the New York Rangers hosted the city's cross-town rivals New York Islanders) 10th floor across the 9th floor arena and ceiling at the end of the 7th ace arena, taking a 400-level seat at the end of 7th Avenue in the process.

Since all seats, except for level 400, are in one monolithic tribune, the horizontal distance from the arena floor is significant from the end of the arena. Also, the lines rise more gradually than any other North American arena, causing a distorted line of sight, especially when sitting behind a tall audience or one of those concourses. This arrangement, however, creates an advantage over the new arena in seats that have a much lower vertical distance than the arena floor.

As part of the 2011-2013 renovation, the club section, 100-level and 200-level have been combined to create a new 100-level lower bowl. Level 300 and level 400 are combined and raised 17 feet closer, forming a new top 200 level bowl. All the skyboxes but those at the end of 7th Avenue have been removed and replaced with balcony seating (8th Avenue) and Chase Bridge Seating (31st Street and 33rd Street). The ceilings on the 9th floor are renovated and are now called Suite Signature. The ceiling at the end of 7th Avenue from Level 10 is now known as the Waiting Room. One small section of level 400 stays near the west end of the arena, and has a blue seat. The media booth has been moved to Chase 31st Street Bridge.

It also hosts the NBA Draft from 2001 to 2010. The theater also occasionally hosts a boxing match on the night when the main arena is unavailable. Fall 1999 Jeopardy! Teen Tournament as well as Celebrity Jeopardy competition! held in the theater. Wheel of Fortune recorded in the theater twice in 1999 and 2013.
