The 2009 Superbike World Championship is the twenty-second season of the Superbike World Championship. It was the second season where HANNspree became the championship's main sponsor. The South African round is back on May 15-17 at Kyalami for the first time since the 2002 season that the Superbike World Championships have been racing there; another change in the calendar is the return of Imola after missing two seasons as a substitute for Vallelunga and the stoppage of Brands Hatch as one of the places in England.
This season saw a revision of the Superpole system, because a single lap format was replaced by a three-part knockout system: after two limited qualifying sessions, twenty fastest riders were accepted in Superpole 1, then sixteen SP1 riders first advanced to Superpole 2 and eight SP2 riders first contested Superpole 3, who finally got the pole position. In addition, replacing bikes during races (also known as flag-to-flag) is permitted to avoid disruptions caused by changing weather conditions.
Ben Spies won the championship in his rookie season, fixing Noriyuki Haga in the final decider round. Ducati is the winner of the manufacturer's championship, winning eleven races.
