The 2002 Superbike World Championship is the fifteenth FIM Superbike World Championship season. The season starts on March 2 in Valencia and ends on September 29th at Imola after 13 rounds.
Colin Edwards won his second championship in what is considered one of the most memorable comebacks in the history of motorcycle racing. The season begins with Troy Bayliss winning the first six races and at the end of race 1 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca he has 14 wins and leads the championship with 58 points. Race 2 at Laguna Seca was the start of Colin Edwards's comeback, he went on to win all nine remaining races and combined with a 2 race race for Bayliss at Assen Edwards won the championship in the final race of the season at Imola. The last race of the season saw the two riders battling the wheels to the wheel for the entire race. The race is known to fans as "Showdown at Imola".
The manufacturer's championship was won by Ducati.
