Looking for an Internship opportunity?! United City is Hiring ...

An internship is the period of work experience offered by the organization for a limited period of time. After being limited to medical graduates, the term is now used for placements in businesses, nonprofits and government agencies. They are usually done by students and graduates who want to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field. Employers benefit from this placement because they often hire employees from their best apprentices, who have known skills, saving time and money in the long term. Internships are usually arranged by third party organizations that recruit internships on behalf of industry groups. Rules vary from country to country about when an intern should be considered an employee. The system can be open to exploitation by unscrupulous employers.

Internships for a professional career are similar in some respects, but not as strict as an internship for professions, commerce, and vocational work. Lack of standardization and supervision leave the term "apprentice" open to broad interpretations. Apprentices may be high school, college and college students, or post-graduate adults. This position can be paid or not paid and is temporary.

Typically, an internship consists of a service exchange for experience between an apprenticeship and an organization. Internships are used to determine whether the internship still has an interest in that field after real life experience. In addition, internships can be used to create professional networks that can assist with letters of recommendation or lead to future employment opportunities. The benefit of bringing an apprentice to a full-time job is that they are familiar with the company, their position, and they usually require little or no training. Internships give college students the ability to participate in their chosen field to receive hands about learning about a particular future career, preparing them for full time work after graduation.

Internships exist in various industries and settings. Internships can be paid, unpaid, or partially paid (in the form of a salary). Internships may be part-time or full-time and are usually flexible with student schedules. A typical apprentice period lasts between one to four months, but may be shorter or longer depending on the organization involved. Job shadowing may also be an internal practice. The

  • paid internships are common in professional fields including medicine, architecture, science, engineering, law, business (especially accounting and finance), technology and advertising. Internship experience usually occurs during the second or third year of school. This type of internship is to broaden the internship knowledge both in their school as well as in the company. The intern is expected to bring ideas and knowledge from school to company.
  • Job research, virtual research (graduation) or dissertation: This is mostly done by students who are in the final year of school. With this kind of internship, a student conducts research for a particular company. Companies can have something they feel needs to be improved, or students can choose topics within the company itself. The results will be included in the report and often should be presented.
  • Unpaid internships usually through non-profit charities and think tanks that often have unpaid positions or volunteers.
  • Partial-paid internships is when students are paid in pocket money. Funds are usually fixed amounts paid regularly. Typically, paid internships with benefits are paid on a set schedule associated with the organization.

Another popular type of internship is the virtual apprenticeship, where interns work remotely, and are not physically present at the work site. It provides the capacity to gain work experience without the conventional requirements physically present in the office. This internship is done through virtual means, such as telephone, email, and web communications. Virtual internees generally have the opportunity to work at their own pace.

Internship with cost

Companies looking for internships often find and put students in most internships without pay, at a cost. These companies charge students to assist research, promising to refund costs if no apprentices are found. Courses vary and aim to provide internship placements in reputable companies. Some companies can also provide controlled housing in new cities, guidance, support, networking, weekend activities or academic credits.

Some companies specifically fund scholarships and grants for low-income applicants. Apprentice criticism criticizes the practice of requiring certain college credits to be obtained only through unpaid internships. Depending on the cost of the school, this is often seen as unethical practice, because it requires students to redeem the credit of the paid fees and is often limited to uncompensated work. Paying for academic credits is a way to ensure students complete the duration of the apprenticeship, because they can be held accountable by their academic institutions. For example, a student may be granted academic credits only after their university receives a positive review from the apprentice supervisor at the sponsoring organization.
