The Honda Ballade is a subcompact car built by Honda Japan. It started as a content version of four-door equipment higher than the Civic in 1980. Ballades developed at the same time Honda Vigor appeared, which is a higher Honda Accord content. In Japan, Ballade is sold exclusively at Honda Verno dealerships with Vigor, Prelude, CR-X, and Quint. In the UK was launched simultaneously with Triumph Acclaim which is similar to that used to share Honda-made machines.

History

The car's name is taken from "ballade", French word for ballad. Because both, four-door Ballade sedans and five-door Quintet hatchbacks, are both high-end luxury vehicles derived from the Honda Civic, Ballade represents the type of music, and Quintet represents the music group. The Ballade competed in Japan with the Toyota Sprinter, and Nissan Laurel Spirit as a Civic competed with Corolla, and Sunny.

Launched in September 1980, nine months after an agreement between Honda and Leyland England to produce their own car version and work in the car of the future together. Although the original Ballade was never sold in Europe, Leyland UK produced its own version of the Ballade - Triumph Acclaim - from 1981 to 1984.

After 1984, Ballade divides most of its body panels with the Civic, except for the sporty front, and forms the basis of the original CR-X and Rover 200 sports car. From this second generation Ballade the top model - EX-i - featuring an all-aluminum 1.5L naturally aspirated 12 valve engine with multi-point fuel injection (using Honda PGM-FI system) develops 100 brake horsepower (75 kW) engine the same is used on the first generation Civic CRX. Other features of the EX-i include all-round electric windows, electric and heated mirror wings, metallic paint, vented front disc brakes and hydraulic assisted power steering. The lower specification model features the same 1.5L engine but with a fuel injection provided through the carburretor, providing 85 horsepower (63 kW) brakes. In keeping with styling trends shared with other Honda Verno products, second-generation cars adopted partially disguised lights from 1983, shared with Vigor, Quint Integra, Ballade Sports CR-X, and Prelude.

The ballade in Japan was replaced in September 1987, with the Honda Concerto 5-door hatchback and sedan as a luxury luxury offered at newly established Honda dealerships in Japan. Since Ballade is basically a luxury version of the Civic sedan, Honda repositioned the Ballade from Honda Verno, first under the name Concerto, then renamed again Honda Domani at Honda Clio, and introduced it with the Honda Accord, Honda Inspire, and Honda Legend in 1992, with the Civic now headlining at Honda Primo stores. The sports version of the Civic loosely held by Ballade evolved into the Honda Integra, and took on the market position originally held by Ballade at Honda Verno at the dealership location.

In South Africa, the name plate was revived in 2011 for Honda City sold in other markets.

Honda Ballade (South Africa) reintroduction

The name Ballade continues to be used for Civic-based models in South Africa, where it is used instead of Civic in locally produced versions until 2001. South African Ballades are assembled by local subsidiary Daimler-Benz, who want to market smaller and cheaper cars besides model Mercedes-Benznya. The name Ballade was adopted because it is considered to have a more luxurious and upscale connotation than the Civic name. This is important because Ballade is sold through Mercedes-Benz dealer channels.

In March 2011, Honda City was launched as a Honda Ballade in South Africa.
