Season summary
Suzuki sees a strong challenge from Yamaha to take the second consecutive 500cc crown. Angel Nieto made him three consecutive 50cc titles at Bultaco while Morbidelli will win an impressive double world championship in the 125cc and 250cc divisions. Pier Paolo Bianchi managed to defend the 125cc title while compatriot Mario Lega clinched the 250cc championship for a small Italian problem. The 350cc crown goes to Takazumi Katayama on a special three-cylinder Yamaha built in the Netherlands, making it the first Japanese world champion. Barry Sheene made two major titles in a row, winning from two Americans, Steve Baker and Pat Hennen.
This season was marred by fatal accidents, including a terrible accident at the 350cc Austrian Grand Prix which claimed the lives of Swiss rider Hans Stadelmann and seriously injured Johnny Cecotto, Patrick Fernandez, Dieter Braun and Franco Uncini. The accident caused a racer attack in the 500 class, although organizers continued to press with Jack Findlay winning from a diminished field of competitors. Braun decided to end his riding career after recovering from his injuries.
In addition to this incident, the Yugoslav Grand Prix at the notoriously violent Opatija Circuit was also hit by tragedy. After the FIM's ultimatum was issued, the Yugoslav contest organizers failed to take action to improve circuit safety - renowned for roadside hazards including solid rock walls and steep, almost unprotected drop offs. The event was a disaster with Italian rider Giovanni Ziggiotto, who crashed during training for the 250cc race when his motorcycle engine was confiscated and he was hit from behind by Per-Edward Carlson. He died four days later at the hospital. During the 50Ã, cc race, Ulrich Graf fell when his bicycle developed a rear tire prick and he was thrown into a stone wall. He suffered serious head injuries and died in the hospital. The Opatija circuit is never used again for any kind of racing and, the Yugoslav Grand Prix is ââtransferred to the nearby Rijeka permanent circuit.
Despite taking second place in the 500cc championship and winning the Formula 750 title, Baker will be released by Yamaha at the end of the year. Giacomo Agostini will retire after this season, ending his career for seventeen years by registering 122 Grand Prix victories and 15 World Championships.
