The Toyota RAV4 ( Japan: ??? RAV4 , Toyota Ravuf? ) is a compact crossover SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured by Japanese car manufacturer Toyota. This is the first compact crossover SUV; it debuted in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995. The vehicle is designed for consumers who want a vehicle that has most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo space, higher visibility, and full-time four-time drive wheels, along with maneuverability and fuel economy of compact cars. Although not all RAV4 is four-wheel-drive, RAV4 stands for "Vehicle Recreational Activity: 4 wheel drive", because the above mentioned equipment is a choice in certain countries.

In most markets, the RAV4 is the only compact SUV or crossover available from Toyota. In other markets, it is a crossover partner of the Toyota FJ Cruiser.

For third-generation models, Toyota offers both short and long-wheelbase versions of RAV4. The short wheelbase version is sold in Japan and Europe; long wheelbase version in Australia and North America. Toyota Japan also sells longer wheelbase version as Toyota Vanguard ( Japan: ???????? , Toyota Vang? do ) , at the Toyopet Store location. The Japanese version is sold at two different Toyota Japan dealers, called the Toyota Corolla Store and Toyota NETZ Store.

Generasi pertama (XA10; 1994-2000)

The first generation of RAV4, known as the XA10 series is built on a unique platform that shares elements of Carina and Corolla. Launched in Japan in May 1994.

The XA10 series is available in three and five-door versions. In the US, a direct-four 2.0-liter produce of 89 kW (119 hp, 121 PS) is available. Both the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available, and the RAV4 can be owned with a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic. It was named 1997 Automobile of the Year by Automobile Magazine. In 1997 for the 1998 model, the RAV4 was slightly restored on the front and rear fascia, and a three-door soft top was available. Power increased slightly to 95 kW (127 hp; 129 PS). In June 1999, a two-door hardtop was derived from the American lineup, leaving a five-door and soft top model. In Japan, a 2.0-liter 3S-GE BEAMS engine with 132Ã, kW (177Ã, hp; 179Ã, PS) is also available. Some variants of Toyota RAV4 1998 are labeled as SXA11 rather than XA10, paired with the owner named "RAV 4.1".

RAV4 EV

The RAV4 EV is a plug-in, all-electric variant of RAV4. Produced from 1997 to 2003 for fleet rental, this "zero emission" model was only offered for public sale for seven months in 2002, in very small quantities in California. Powered by advanced Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries capable of storing 27 kWh, the RAV4 EV can go up to 193 km (120 mi) between charges, and comes with a 97,000 km (60,000 mi) battery warranty. A total of 1,484 units are leased and/or sold in California, and by mid-2012, there are nearly 500 units still in use.

Second generation (XA20; 2000-2005)

The second generation, XA20 RAV4 series went on sale in July 2000. Like the previous model, XA20 is available in three and five-door configurations and is built on a platform that shares elements of Carina and Corolla. Construction began in 1995, with a frozen design in the first half of 1998. Styling was performed at Calty Design Research Incorporated (also known only as Calty) by Yasuhide Hosoda and Kevin Hunter from 1996 to 1997.

The second generation RAV4 was initially offered in a number of trim levels in the UK: NV is a front-wheel drive, while the NRG, GX, and VX are permanent four-wheel drive with various levels of equipment. Although the RAV4 is available as three doors in Europe, Asia and Australia, the American model is now only available in a five-door configuration. The 1.8-liter four-line engine (with only 2WD) produces 92 kW (123 hp, 125 PS), 2.0 liter inline-four engines that produce 110 kW (150 hp, 150 PS), 2.4-liter inline-four engines which produces 118 kW (158 hp, 160 PS), and a D-4D diesel engine is available. Some of the RAV4 comes with an anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, air conditioning, adjustable height seats, cruise control, six speaker CD stereo and power windows, mirrors and seats. The sports package adds mesh grilles, bonnet covers, colorful door handles, roof racks, silver sports pedals, heated mirrors, gray-painted bumpers and flare fenders, and sports cloth chairs. Other options include alloy wheels, hot chairs, sunroof and keyless entry. The 16 inch wheels are standard; larger tires are available on all-wheel-drive models.

In Australia, the RAV4 comes with an Edge and Cruiser upper-class model in three and five-door configurations. The main differentiation between the two models is in appearance. The edge model comes with unpainted gray bumpers and side linings, mirrors, and door handles, and steel rims. Cruiser models get bumpers and colored body molds (painted), mirrors, and door handles, wheels, and ABS brakes. All models are equipped with a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine featuring VVT (variable valve timing), resulting in increased power and torque, as well as fuel consumption. Permanent all-wheel-drive is a feature. The options are ABS brakes (in Edge), and AC (on all models). The second generation of RAV4 enjoys success in Australia, where it became the country's best-selling SUV in 2001, surpassing its competitors, the Honda CR-V, for the first time.

By the end of 2003, the 2004 RAV4 model was updated with styling, enhanced equipment, and, in certain markets, new machines. In the United States the security structure is enhanced and Vehicle Stability Control is standardized. The 2.0-liter RAV4 engine is upgraded with a new 2.4-liter engine, producing 120 kW (160 hp, 160 PS) and 220 N? M (162 lb. Ft). Electric AC is also available in Europe.

In Australia, for facelift, Basic Edge is renamed to CV, and obtains standard AC (formerly an option). The CV also receives painted bumpers, which come in silver or body color, depending on body color. In addition, various models were given a delicate facelift, mostly consisting of a new front bumper with circular fog lamps and a white turn signal instead of older orange lights. In 2005, a new "CV Sport" model was added to the range in Australia, which included a non-functional bonnet spoon, giving the RAV4 a more aggressive appearance. The CV Sport model was short-lived, lasting just one year, and was introduced primarily to stimulate sales until a new model arrived in early 2006.

In particular, the second generation RAV4 has the highest proportion of female drivers among all brands and models in the United States with the possible exception of Volkswagen New Beetle, according to the 2003-2004 enrollment and survey data.

Third generation (XA30; 2005-2012)

Toyota RAV4 was redesigned for the 2006 model, using the all-new platform and was first introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2005. The new RAV4 uses the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system.

The third generation RAV4 is offered in two versions: a short model or a long wheelbase. The short wheelbase model is only sold in Japan, Europe and New Zealand (only in NZ), with RAV4 long wheelbase sold in Australia, New Zealand and North America. Since 2007, the extended RAV4 is also sold along with its shorter counterpart in Japan as the Toyota Vanguard , although with revised front-end bodywork incorporating revised grille, bumper, bonnet and headlights.

Japanese models went on sale in 2005 at Toyota NETZ dealers. 3 doors were dropped in early 2007, leaving Toyota without a mini SUV until the 2009 Toyota Cruiser Urban, sold in Europe, North America (like Scion xD) and Japan (like Toyota ist). The XA30 RAV4 Series is sold in Japan until July 2016, where XA40 is not offered and replaced there by Toyota C-HR. Toyota stopped Vanguard in November 2013 to support the redesigned XU60 Harrier. As the RAV4 continues to grow, it becomes expensive to own in Japan because the exterior dimensions and engine displacement place it in the top tax bracket as defined by Japanese Government dimensions regulations and annual road tax liabilities, and C-HR becomes more affordable.

It is also the first generation RAV4 to be offered on a regular basis (for Asian and European markets, dropping wheel spare from the rear) and expanding (for North American and Australian market) versions. The extended RAV4 length is 21% larger in the interior volume of the last generation and now has the third row seat available for two small children (North America and Japan only). RAV4 can still be owned in front of wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive in North America and Japan; But most countries only sell all-wheel-drive versions.

In 2008 (for the 2009 model year), the RAV4 was refreshed mid-cycle in multiple markets, featuring a number of changes, including a new 4-cylinder engine, and a redesigned front end and a tweaked rear. The Limited model gets a front grille and a bumper cover that is different from other models. The Sport model features a larger red spoiler and fade along with an option on the V6 model to have a back door with no externally mounted external tires (run-flat tires used on this model). New features/options include turn signal integrated into side mirror, backup camera (with monitor mounted in rearview mirror), satellite navigation, smart keyless entry, starter push button, multi-function instrument cluster display etc. Much of the interior remains the same. In 2009, it was also the first time for the Canadian market to have a 2WD model sold in Canada.

In 2011 (for the 2012 model year), the RAV4 has another, light, facelift.

The vehicle was built at Tahara Toyota, Aichi assembly plant, and under contract by Toyota Industries at Nagakusa plant, Obu, Aichi. Starting November 2008, vehicles for the North American market were built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc., the Second Factory. Starting in March 2009, Chinese models began to be produced by Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co. Ltd. at a joint venture in Tianjin, China.

By 2015, the XA30 RAV4 series was awarded the pre-owned WheelsTV vehicle of the year title.

Japan

Model ranges include X , G , and Sport , replacing RAV4L and RAV4 J . The X and G can be ordered with either front-wheel-drive or AWD. Model Sport with fenders more than AWD only. The extended-length RAV4 is sold in Japan as Toyota Vanguard, released on August 30, 2007. It is sold in five and seven passenger versions and a slot between the regular RAV4 and Kluger. As is often the case with vehicles that are only available in Japan, Vanguard is equipped with high-tech gadgets, including steering-assisted stability control, keyless entry and satellite navigation. Toyota Vanguard in facelift in 2010.

Australia

In Australia, RAV4 is sold on four-cylinder basis CV , Cruiser , Cruiser L and limited edition "Height" trim levels, and CV6 , SX6 , and ZR6 are a 6-cylinder variant. V6 available from 2007.

Middle East

In the Middle East, RAV4 is available with a 2.4-liter engine. Most markets, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), get an all-wheel-drive model with an automatic gearbox, but KSA also gets a two-wheel-drive model, the most basic with manual gearboxes.

North America

The North American model includes a choice of 2-inches-four or 3.5-liter 2GZ-FE V6 engines. The V6 model has 201 kW (270 hp, 273 PS). In the 2009 model, a slightly larger 133 kW (178 hp, 181 PS) 2.5 liter 2AR-FE inline-four replaces the previous 124 kW (166Ã, hp; 169Ã, PS) engine 2.4 liter. Either four-cylinder engine is equipped with four-speed automatic transmission. North American RAV4 with 3.5 liter V6 engine 2GR-FE is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission. All US models feature a Toyota Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control. The new RAV4 topped Toyota SUV sales in the United States for the first time.

No manual transmission or diesel engine is available on North American models.

Facelifted for the 2009 model, the North American model included the new VAR engine's <2AR-FE or <2GR-FE options.

Mexico

The RAV4 was first introduced in 2004; and is only available in two trim levels: Base and L. It's been an outgoing generation but it's still sold well enough and both are only 2WD and both models have, as standard 16-inch alloy wheels and roof racks. The new generation of RAV4, which is the current model, has more features as standard equipment. Base and Limited trim continues to be available, but on the Limited 4WD trim becomes an option and the Base model now adds a 17 inch steel wheel but the roof rack is still standard on both trims. For refresh 2009, the roof rack in the Base model has been eliminated as standard equipment and Sport trim is added to the line-up. Until 2008MY all RAV4 in Mexico have a four-cylinder engine but for 2009 Sport models become available with V6 engine, although four-cylinder engine is still available. Trim Limited is available only with V6 engine and 4WD traction. For 2010, the RAV4 in Mexico has been simplified again into two trims but now the Limited trim is dropped and consequently kills the 4WD option, while Base and Sport trims remain unchanged from 2009. RAV4 in Mexico has experienced a good reception since its introduction.

China

XA30 RAV4 began production in China in April 2009. The trim levels are 2.0 Classic, 2.0 Luxury, 2.0 Luxury Navi, 2.4 Luxury, and 2.4 Luxury Navi. Prices range from 198,800 yuan to 264,300 yuan (30,849 to 41,014 USD).

The RAV4 has a different styling compared to RAV4 in other countries where there is a black strip placed between the radiator and the plate like a mustache. It also has a chrome bar under the front and rear bumpers. The plate was also moved to the bottom of the bumper to make way for the RAV4 logo and the rear foglamp. Front and rear parking sensors are also standard.

RAV4 EV

Toyota is working with Tesla Motors to develop a second-generation RAV4 EV, and an electric SUV is scheduled for market launches by the end of the third quarter of 2012. Production will be limited to 2,600 units during the first three years, and sales will be limited to California alone, starting with San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County and San Diego.

The second generation RAV4 EV has a 115Ã, kW (154Ã, hp; 156Ã, PS) motor powered by a lithium ion battery with a capacity of 41.8kWh, which is expected to be provided by the US Environmental Protection Agency which has a range of 148Ã, Km (92Ã, mi) in standard charging mode and 182 km (113 mi) in extended charging mode, for a combined range of 166 km (103 mi); and a combined fuel economy rating of 3.1 L/100 km (91 mpg -imp ; 76 mpg -US ). Fourth generation (XA40; 2012-2018)

RAV4 fourth generation is a complete redesign; it was revealed in November 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

US sales begin in early January 2013. In the UK and Australia, the fourth generation RAV4 goes on sale in February. Engine options include both 2.0 and 2.5 liter four-cylinder petrol, as well as 2.0 and 2.2 liter turbodiesel. The transmission includes a six-speed manual, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and six automatic speeds.

RAV4 produced in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada has about 50% of its share coming from Japan.

The British model goes on sale in 2013. Early European models include a 2.0 liter petrol option or one of three 2.0 liter diesel engines.

The Taiwan model includes a 2.0 liter Dual VVT-i inline four-cylinder engine with Continuous Transmission Continuous 7 Speed (Sequential Guide) or 2.5-liter Dual VVT-i inline-four engine with six automatic speed.

The Indonesian model went on sale for a short time in early 2015 and was first introduced at Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2014 in Jakarta in September, only available in type G. This includes a 2.0 liter Dual VVT-i engine with CVT transmission ( with seven-speed manual mode). The facelift version is currently available at local imported car dealerships in Indonesia by 2017.

The RAV4 no longer uses V6 from the previous generation - all engine options are inline four-cylinder engine. Also, unlike the double wheelbase strategy used by previous XA30 models, XA40 is only sold in a single wheelbase (in accordance with LWB XA30). Therefore, in April 2014, the previous generation within short wheelbase is still being sold in Japan as a replacement for the newer XA40 which is only for export. Harrier replaced the long wheelbase model in Japan, which was previously crowned as Vanguard. This generation of RAV4 has a more traditional tailgate that opens up rather than the side-opening tailgate of the previous generation.

The full hybrid system combines a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle engine with powerful electric motors, high voltage generators, 204 nickel metal hydride batteries located beneath the rear seats, power control units, and power dividers. RAV4 Hybrids is available in both front and all-wheel drive variants. The all-wheel edition is equipped with an electric motor mounted on the back, with a 50 watt electrical voltage, which offers increased traction and a pulling capacity of 1,750 pounds (790 kg). The machine is capable of operating independently of the hybrid electric front engine, moving the rear wheels alone.

Facelift

In 2015 for the 2016 model year, Toyota released a facelift for the XA40 series. Facelift debuted with the RAV4 Hybrid that was featured on the April 2015 New York International Auto Show. The facelift includes redesigned rear headlamps and rear LEDs and updated speedometer dial with full color TFT color information display.

Keamanan

In the evaluation of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 and 2014 RAV4 models achieve a "good" congestion rating for moderate head and seat restraints, roof strength, side and front, while achieving a "poor" rating in Small Frontal Overlap Test IIHS. Mods are made starting from the 2015 model year which improves the small overlapping front rank to "good".

Small overlap test, introduced in 2012 by the IIHS, simulating a frontal collision at 25 percent of the driver's side. Since its adoption, IIHS has seen some cars make non-symmetrical modifications to their vehicles, including the RAV4. Other small overlap test carried out on a number of vehicles, including the RAV4 in 2015, but carried on the passenger side instead. The RAV4 fared worst and will receive a "poor" rating if IIHS is to provide ratings for passenger side protection. Disorders crash testing is 330 mm (13 inches) further into the vehicle on the passenger side than on the driver's side and cause the passenger door open during the accident.

RAV4 Adventure and RAV4 Premium (2013)

The RAV4 Adventure is a concept vehicle that accentuates the look of the car to strengthen its off-road capabilities. These include dark red body colors, extended wheel arches, 20-inch alloy wheels and matte painted front and rear bumper.

The RAV4 Premium is a concept vehicle with Deep Bronze body color, bumpers in Deep Bronze, chrome-plated spoiler, chrome inserts on rear bumper, brushed aluminum skid plate, integrated exhaust on rear bumper, 20-inch wheels, leather interior seats designed by department Toyota Kansei design, black pipe seats and V-shape lines, double-tone double stitching and gray and black leather on instrument panel and door panels.

Both vehicles were unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2013.

The production version of RAV4 Adventure is added to the US lineup in September 2017.
