The Hyundai Genesis CoupÃÆ'Â © is a rear-wheel drive sports car from Hyundai Motor Company, which was released on October 13, 2008 for the Korean market. This is Hyundai's first sport rear-wheel drive coupe, and shares the basic platform with the luxury Hyundai Genesis sedan.

Genesis Coupe arrives at United States dealership on February 26, 2009 as a 2010 model. Hyundai USA CEO and CEO John Krafcik describes the Genesis Coupe designed "... to provide a challenging car-driving experience like the Infiniti G37."

With the launch of Genesis Motors as a stand-alone luxury brand, Hyundai Genesis Coupe will remain branded as Hyundai. However, it is expected to receive a new name for the next generation to avoid confusion with luxury brands.

Pre-production

Genesis Coupe's highly camouflaged prototype photos appeared on the internet in early May 2007, sparking anticipation and speculation. Spy photographs show that the new Hyundai coupe will be the rear-wheel drive, as the images from the engine bay show the typical engine-length orientation of the front engine, the rear-drive vehicle. The pictures also show a four-cylinder engine with a turbocharger that is wrapped in heat. Speculation on potential engines for the new coupe ranges from four turbocharged cylinders depicted to Tau V8 developed by Hyundai for a luxury-oriented Genesis.

Shortly before the 2007 Los Angeles International Auto show, more photos were leaked from the silver Genesis Coupe next to the silver Ford Mustang, which is thought to be a target competitor to Genesis Coupe.

Initial release

The Genesis Coupe production was unveiled at the 2008 New York International Auto Show, featuring a red and silver model. This opening is accompanied by a demonstration of coupe's ability with strength and fatigue. The North American model went on sale in the spring of 2009 as a 2010 model.

Crop level

Trim Genesis Coupe is based around two engine options. Trim levels include: 2.0T Base, 2.0T R-Spec, 2.0T Premium, 2.0T Track (2010 only) (GT in Canada), 3.8 Base (2010), 3.8 R-Spec (2011), 3.8 Grand Touring, and 3.8 Track (GT in Canada).

The basic model starts with keyless entry, steering audio control, Bluetooth hands-free, tire pressure monitoring system, cruise control, USB/iPod Aux input, electronic stability control, ABS, electronic brake style distribution, 18-inch wheels and strut bar. Base 2.0T uses 6 speed manual transmission or 5 speed automatic while Base 3.8 uses 6 speed manual or automatic transmission. Base 3.8 (2010 only) adds a black leather interior and a "Genesis" door threshold.

The 2.0T Premium and 3.8 Grand Touring adds a touch screen infotainment system with navigation, keyless entry with push-button start, adjustable power driver, heated front seats, leather interior, 360 watt speaker system 10, automatic headlamps, sunroof/moonroof, and electrochromic dimming mirror with compass. The 3.8 Grand Touring is the only model with brown leather, instead of black and ultrasonic rear parking sensors. The 3.8 Grand Touring also received fog lights.

For fans, the R-spec model is equipped with 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, Torsen Limited slip differentials, stiffer suspensions, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A summer tires only, and front-mounted camber bolts (need to be installed). But the R-spec model lost the Premium/Grand Touring feature for weight reduction: Bluetooth hands-free, automatic headlamps, cruise control, travel computer, chrome interior accents, steering audio controls, and only comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. Trim Genesis Coupe R-Spec is available for a base price of $ 3,000 smaller than the Track model.

Trim Track combines an enthusiastic R-spec feature with Premium/Grand Touring features. In addition, the trim further adds HID headlights, fog lamps with DRL, and rear spoiler.

Regional differences

While the Genesis Coupe released in North America will look similar to the Korean version, the suspension settings are more stringent according to American demographics.

Hyundai Canada offers proximity keys for all V6 models, push button start buttons or side-mirror marker on 3.8L models and no spoiler on V6 2.0T or 3.8L. (The US track model is trim only equipped with spoiler). In the fall of 2009, Hyundai started production of Genesis with Navigation system.

In some countries the Hyundai Genesis Coupe will also be sold as Hyundai Genesis R-Spec, which comes with a 3.8 liter and 2.0T engine and features several sports-oriented options.

Reception

Acceptance for the revised Genesis Coupe has been mixed. Edmunds praised the 3.8 R-Spec as "the most exciting car Hyundai made". They also praised the improved transmission, improved engine, and a more balanced suspension, but regretted "we can get into Mustang or Camaro equipped with V6 at a lower cost". They also criticized the slow-moving tachometer and lost power shortly after the high-rpm elevation.

Trend Motor is critically critical of the revised 2.0T R-Spec, putting it the latest in the comparison test, Ford Mustang V6, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Mazda MX-5 Miata. They praised his smooth journey and extra strength, but criticized the "great power-ups", the shameless shifter and interior atmosphere.

When the Car and Driver took the 2013 Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec to Virginia International Raceway for the Lightning Lap annual test, they posted a 3: 13.9 time around the Grand West VIR configuration, 0.1 seconds slower than Genesis Coupe 306-hp 2011 3.8 R-Spec and slower than Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Ford Mustang V6, Chevrolet Cobalt SS and Nissan NISMO 370Z.
