Hondo is a city in and county seat in Madinah County, Texas, United States. According to the 2010 Census, the population is 8,803. This is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography
Hondo is located on 29Ã, à ° 20? 49? N 99Ã, à ° 8? 44? W (29.346838, -99.145543), about 40 miles (64 km) west of Downtown San Antonio.
According to the US Census Bureau, the city has a total area of ââ9.6 square miles (25 km 2 ), where, 9.6 square miles (25 km 2 ) of it is ground and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km 2 ) of it (0.21%) covered with water. Hondo is mentioned in Season 2 Episode 13 of The Night Shift and is described as "two city traffic lights below I-90".

History
The natives of the area, now Medina County, are Coahuiltecan people. Non-indigenous settlers to the area came from Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, Belgium, and Mexico. Many family-owned businesses, farms, and farms are still owned by non-indigenous family descendants.
The first Spaniard to explore the area was Cabeza de Vaca in the early 1530s, some 40 years after Columbus arrived in the New World.
Hondo City was first established in 1881 and was founded in 1942.
Hondo was the scene of two bank robberies in the early 1920s. The villain is the famous Gang Newton, the most successful criminal in US history. Both bank robberies took place on the same night.
In 1930, the local Hondo Lions Club established the now famous sign read "This is God's Country, Do not Drive Through Hell" at the city limits in order to slow down the people who drove while traveling through the city. Then, in 1940 the sign changed to "This is God's Country, Please Do not Drive Through It Like Hell" to satisfy them in a city that is unhappy with the tone of old signs. [1] Alerts have been published in magazines, including on National Geographic covers, and in the music video of Little Texas 'God Blessed Texas'.
The US Army built airfields in the city in 1942 to train new pilots; as well as the world's largest air navigation school, Hondo Army Airfield trained over 14,000 navigators for service during World War II before it closed in 1946.
Demographics
In the 2000 census, there were 7,897 people, 2,207 households, and 1,664 families living in the city. Population density was 823.8 people per square mile (317.9/km ò). There are 2,474 housing units with an average density of 258.1 per square mile (99.6/km²). City's racial makeup is 73.33% White (including Hispanic or Latino of any race is 59.92% of the population), 8.33% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 15.23 % of other races, and 2.38% of two or more races.
There are 2,207 households, of which 39.0% have children under 18 living with them, 56.1% are couples living together, 14.0% have non-husbands female households, and 24.6% are not family. Approximately 21.3% of all households consist of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.38.
In the city, the population is distributed as 26.0% under the age of 18, 12.0% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% years or more. The average age is 30 years. For every 100 women, there are 132.7 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 145.5 men.
The average income for households in the city is $ 27,917, and the average income for families is $ 34,856. Men have an average income of $ 21,639 versus $ 17,868 for women. The per capita income for the city is $ 12,635. Approximately 18.9% of families and 22.6% of the population are below the poverty line, including 31.8% of those under the age of 18 and 17.1% of those aged 65 and older.
Education
Hondo City is served by the Hondo Independent School District and home to Owls SMA Hondo.
Climate
The climate in this region is characterized by hot and humid summers and generally cool to cool winters. According to the K̮'̦ppen Climate Classification system, Hondo has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on the climate map.
Government
Hondo is the home of the 38th Judicial District of Texas.
