The Toyota Sienna is a minivan produced by Toyota at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana facility, in Princeton, Indiana, USA, for the North American market. It replaced the first generation Previa van in 1997 with a more conventional front-wheel drive layout and shared a highly revised platform with the Camry. Both the original Previa and Sienna were smaller than the other minivans they opposed, but the redesign in 2003 (for the 2004 model) increased the dimension to match its competitors. Sienna is currently the only minivan in its class to offer all-wheel-drive. It was redesigned for the second time in 2010 (for the 2011 model year). Sienna's third generation was sold in the US in February 2010 and was the first Sienna to receive the "Top Safety Pick" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Exports from the US to Korea began in November 2011.

In late 1997, Toyota launched the front-wheel drive MY 1998 Sienna in the North American market as a replacement for Previa with a middle engine. Sienna debuted with a 3.0-liter V6 engine 1MZ-FE rated at 194 hp (145 kW) and 209 lb ft (284 NM) of torque. Built on an expanded Toyota Camry platform, Sienna is marketed appropriately as "Camry of minivan", utilizing the popularity and reputation of the Camry. It is named for the Italian city of Siena, in the Tuscany region.
It comes in three trim levels, CE, LE, and XLE. The LE and XLE models are equipped with 2-row captain seats while the CE models are fitted with 2-row 2-row bench seats. Chairs can be folded easily and individually removed as needed. Side drivers of sliding doors and roof racks are standard on LE and XLE models, but are optional on the CE model. The XLE model offers leather upholstery and wood trim packages. Sienna is also touted the best fuel economy in its class of 16 mpg city driving and 22 mpg of driving the highway. Built in Georgetown, Kentucky. A year after it was released, Sienna faced new competition from the redesigned Honda Odyssey minivan, which was larger and offered a V6 like Sienna.
For the 2001 model year, Sienna experienced a mid-cycle refresh. This update includes a facelift to the front and rear fascia that add front grille and redesigned bumper along with revised rear lights with a more modern look (clear crystal-clear lens signals). Toyota also overhauled the center console area to add more usability to the HVAC control along with new locations for accessory switches (rear vents, power sliding doors, heated seats). This machine is also equipped with variable VVT-i valve timing feature which increases output to 210Ã, hp (157Ã,kW) and torque of 220Ã, £ (298Ã,M). Driver side sliding doors are standard on all models, although roof racks remain optional on the CE model.
This generation is worth noting because of its impressive safety content as one of the few minivans that offer options including side-by-side side airbags and Vehicle Stability Control. Anti-lock braking is standard. The Highway Safety Insurance Agency rated Sienna "Excellent" in all six frontal collision test steps, much better than Previa.
This generation's reputation is undermined by a class action settlement for engine oil mud problems affecting V-6 engines in many Toyota models. Symptoms of the problem include exhaust fumes in oil exhaust, oil quickly becomes dark or black after oil changes, gasoline odor in oil, high oil consumption, and eventually the machine breaks down. Toyota commissioned Yuji Yokoya as chief engineer on the new Sienna project. Yokoya and his family rode earlier models over 53,000 miles (85,000 km) across North America to find the weakness of the design. The engine is a 3.3-liter ULEV certified 3MZ-FE V6 paired with a new five-speed automatic transmission. The gear stick is moved from the steering column to the center console and has a shift pattern awake. Seating for eight is optional at lower trim levels, and the third row seat is flat-fold, allowing the van to transport 4 by 8 feet (1.2 by 2.4 m) of building materials such as plywood and drywall sheets.
On January 6, 2003, the second generation Sienna was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. Production was moved from the Georgetown plant to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana. Changes from the first generation included 45 percent more overall volume and 39 percent more cargo space. The chairs are in a 60/40 split configuration, and the third-row flat-row seats are offered even with all-wheel-drive.
Crop levels, in order to improve the standards and features available are: CE, LE, and XLE, and XLE Limited (renamed Limited within the next few years). The most distinguishable difference in the XLE Limited model is the horizontal chrome bar placed on the back plate. CE has a black trim there, while a moderate model has colored trim.
Standard features include remote keyless entry, tilted-and-telescopic steering wheel, and high-energy solar absorbent (HSEA) glass on windshields and front windows. All 2004-2007 Siennas has a factory tow pack (hitch kit and trailer lighting connection not included) and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg).
All wheel drive, optional on the more expensive trim including run-flat tires. The all-wheel drive system continues to split 50:50 front and rear engine power.
The options, depending on the trim level, include the Xenon HID headlamps, Dynamic Laser Sail Controls, parking sensors, rear-view convex mirrors to enable drivers to see passengers, voice-activated navigation systems (not voice activated for 2004 models) Including backup cameras, JBL 10-speak audio and rear seat DVD entertainment system with two 110V outlets.
New style allowed for drag coefficient C d = 0.30. EPA Fuel economy is 17 mpg city driving and 23 mpg highway for FWD version. AWD version gets 16 mpg city driving and 22 mpg highway driving. The turning radius is 11.2 meters (37 feet).
Security
Sienna became standard with anti-lock braking, brake relief, electronic brake power distribution, traction control, and tire pressure monitoring system. Side torso airbags, and side curtain airbags are standard on certain LE and XLE 2004 and 2005 trim models whilst optional on the other, but are standard on all trim 2006. Stability Control Vehicles were initially optional at lower trims becoming standard for 2008 models.
IIHS gave Sienna a "Good" overall score in their frontal offset collision test with a "Good" sign in all six measurable categories. All 2006 models and then received the overall score of "Good", while the pre-2006 model without side airbag received an "Acceptable" score for side effects.
Model year changes
- 2006: front fascia, side mold, and headlights restyled. Blue-backlit electroluminescent Optitron gauges are added to LE, XLE, and Limited trims. The prefix "XLE" in "XLE Limited" has been removed, and the new exclusive equipment for this trim includes optional memory functions for power driver seats and side-view mirrors (also available on XLE as an option) and exterior sides that double the power of the mirror with integrated in-glass LED turn-signal repeaters. Other options include Bluetooth and a third row seat that doubles the power. The air grilles on the front and side airbags for all three lines become standard equipment on all models. Optional rear seat audio system is discontinued. The rank of horsepower and torque was changed to meet SAE's new standard for 215 hp (160 kW) and 222 pounds (from 230 hp (172 kW) and 242 pounds (328 N m), Toyota also now rated the engine at 87 octane).
- 2007: New V6 engine ULEV-II certified 3.5 liter 2GR-FE V6 with 266 hp (198 kW) power with 17/23 MPG measured fuel economy for front-wheel drive model and 16/21 MPG for AWD model replaces 3.3 liter V6. The tire pressure monitor is enhanced, and the new seven spoke alloy wheels design is made exclusively for the Limited and AWD models.
- 2008: Vehicle Stability Control is standard on all trims.
- 2009: Sienna remains largely unchanged, except for price revisions to become more competitive through some comprehensive "extra-value package" offerings. In Canada, the base price is lowered to $ 1,500.
- 2010: Second generation Sienna has not changed in its final year model.

Third generation (XL30; 2010-current)
The redesigned 2011 Sienna at the Los Angeles Auto Show in early December 2009. It was designed at Calty's studio and engineered at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan. Sienna just arrived at the dealership in February 2010.
Sienna is offered in five trim levels, Sienna's LE , XLE , Limited class and for the first time trim < i> SE . New SE offers revised bodywork, crystal clear tail lights, 19 inch wheels (480 mm), firmer suspensions, and revised steering for sporty ride. All-wheel-drive is only available with a V6 engine on the LE , XLE and Limited model trims. Described by AOL Autos who slipped a sports car in a minivan, Chief Engineer Kazuo Mori (an avid autocrosser) is reportedly having to overcome a clash to get the SE equipment package included in the line-up.
The previous 3.5-liter 2GR-FE continues, but for the first time Sienna offers a four-cylinder engine, 1AR-FE ; and is the first time Toyota has offered four-cylinder engines in North American minivans since the suspension of Estima/Previa in late 1997. The EPS replaces the previous hydraulic power steering system. Toyota continues to offer all wheel drive in Sienna. It is the only North American minivan with available AWD drivetrain available. Toyota expects EPA mileage estimates of 19 mpg -US (12.4 L/100 km) city/24 mpg -US (9.8 L/100 km) highway for models supported by 4-cylinder engines, 18 mpg -US (13.1 L/100 km) city/24 mpg -US (9.8 L/100 km) highway for the 2WD V6 model, and 16 mpg -US (14,7Ã, L/100Ã, km) city/22 mpg -US (10, 7Ã, L/100Ã, km) highway for AWD model. The optional crane package for the V6 model is rated 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg).
The front dashboard has a "swinging" wood trim, inspired by the Toyota Venza and Lexus RX, which give the front passenger a 60/60 "split" either in the driver or in the passenger seat.
New features include an optional sliding second row with "Seating Seat" seat chairs, features previously seen on Lexus LS, and Toyota Keyless Smart Key System with push-button start. The rear seat entertainment option now uses a 16.4-inch (41.7 cm) LCD display that operates in two display modes, 16: 9 single-ratio ratios or two separate split split 4: 3 screens with separate wireless headphones.
For security, the backup camera comes with a new 180 ° Â ° panoramic view. Other new options include the Pre-Collision System (PCS) as well as the automatic high-beam dimmer, Safety Connect and the more advanced stability control system known as Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Management. - 2015: Small facelift with tail light and new interior design is shown, though Sienna SE maintains an early "sport" tail light that uses a facelift while the remaining trim accepts new tail lights (L, LE, XLE, and Limited). Toyota added three new colors ( Sky Blue Pearl , Creme Brulee Metallic , and Attitude Black Metallic ). For Limited and SE models, Sienna features refreshing lights with daytime LED lights. The rest of the trims (L, LE, and XLE) have the same headlamp as the pre-facelift.
- 2017: Six-speed automatic transmission replaced with 8-speed engine and revision of 2GR-FKS which adds Toyota D4-S direct injection fuel system. The new engine increases power up to 296 hp (221 kW), with torque increasing to 263 pounds (357 Â ° LU). 2018: second lightweight facelift with new front grille, new headlamps, new side skirts, standard Safety Sense, slight increased noise and vibration, and additional technology such as an extra USB port, an updated rear entertainment system (for models equipped with this option), and a semi-digital instrument cluster.
