History

In the first decade of the twentieth century, John Brisben Walker had a vision of performing artists on a stage located in the perfect acoustic environment of Red Rocks, possibly used by the Ute tribes of old. Walker produced a number of concerts between 1906 and 1910 on a temporary platform; and from his dream, the history of Red Rocks as a place of entertainment began. It took the Red Rocks natural amphitheater more than 200 million years to form. The city of Denver acquired the Red Rocks amphitheater from Walker for $ 54,133, a total area of 728 hectares. In addition to the platform, Walker also built the cable train Mount Morrison Cable Incline that took travelers from a base in the amphitheater parking lot to this day to enjoy the view from the peak of Mount Morrison; The rise of operations for about five years began in 1909.

Geologically, the rocks that surround the amphitheater represent the Fountain Formation. Originally the place was known as the "Garden of the Angels" (1870s-1906), and later as the "Garden of the Titans" during the Walker years (1906-1928). This park, however, was always known by the folk name of "Red Rocks", which became its official name when Denver got it in 1928. The amphitheater rocks were named "Creation Rock" in the north, "Ship Rock" in the south, and "Stage Rock" to east. Red Rocks Amphitheater was designed by Denver architect, Burnham Hoyt. The amphitheater wall contains records dating from the Jurassic period 160 million years ago because a nearby dinosaur trace has been discovered as well as a fossilized fragment of a 40-foot sea snake Plesiosaur.

In 1927, George Cranmer, Manager of Denver Parks, convinced City of Denver to buy Red Rocks area of Walker for $ 54,133 ($ 737,382 in 2015 dollars). Cranmer convinced Benjamin Franklin Stapleton, Mayor of Denver, Colorado, to build the foundation founded by Walker. By applying for the assistance of the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC), and the Employment Progress Administration (WPA), labor and materials are provided for the business. The construction of the amphitheater began in 1936 and was opened to the public in June 1941.
