Careers
Paul Tan's career in automotive journalism took root in his childhood. Paul was not born into a special family. When Paul studied at the Victoria Institute in Kuala Lumpur, his father developed cancer. Paul was forced into trouble at an early age and had to take some work to earn extra money for his family, including his mother, a housewife, and a brother, who was four years younger. Paul worked as an apprentice at G-LabWorks Sdn Bhd between November and December 2000, where he performed his HTML and JavaScript skills. During the first six months of 2001, he worked as a web developer at AMP Radio Networks (currently known as Astro Radio). He leads a team of 3 other web developers for the Xfresh Teen Community online portal at www.xfresh.com . Paul also designed a bus wrap that promotes the Xfresh website on the Intrakota bus. In 2001, Paul graduated with Malaysia Certificate of Study Sijil (SPM) in the Science stream.
After graduation, Paul Tan enrolled in an IT-related degree at HELP University, Damansara Heights. However, when Paul was 19, his father died, forcing Paul to leave college to find full-time employment in an effort to pay his siblings' bills and education. Paul's first attempt at entrepreneurship came in the form of his work in 2003 at Hulk Solutions Sdn. Bhd. As Chief Technology Officer (CTO). He is responsible for managing the Hulk Solution information system resources, which includes the maintenance of rack servers used for hosting applications at Telekom Malaysia Internet Data Center (TMIDC) in Cyberjaya. Paul is coded on the LAMP platform and his clients include well known names like The Star, The Malay Mail, Monsoon Cup, and Peugeot.
During Paul's tenure at Hulk Solutions, the notion of paultan.org was developed. Originally starting out as a personal WordPress-based blog about Malaysia's auto industry, Paul quickly recognized the potential of the platform when internet traffic to his blog began growing for several months. As of 2006, paultan.org has become a popular news portal in Malaysia, and by using Google AdSense it generates revenue between RM5,000 to 6,000 per month. The term 'paultan' is also among the most frequently searched in 'categories of people' by Malaysian Google users by Zeitgeist End of Year 2007 Malaysia.
With continued paultan.org , there was a growing demand for Malaysian automotive television shows. During Paul's years in high school, he had become a close friend of Harvinder Singh Sidhu. In 2008, Paul approached Harvinder, who recently completed a diploma at UCSI University, Cheras, with the proposition of a television show. After careful consideration, both Paul and Harvinder join and join Driven Media Sdn. Bhd. (Now known as Driven Communications Sdn Bhd.) In October 2008. Initially, Driven Media was exclusively run and managed by two friends, but later grew to five or six staff after the launch of an automotive television program called Driven . The show was made for two reasons, according to Paul; the first simply because there was no credible automotive television show in Malaysia, at that time period. The second is that the Driven show will lend significant legitimacy to the paultan.org website, which prior to the show, often ignored and belittled by mainstream media and car companies. They see paultan.org as a personal blog, and Paul Tan as a blogger. Perception perceptions are increasingly moving the development of Driven event, which finally materialized in early 2010, after the shooting process was completed in 2009. Driven Media Sdn. Bhd. Find sponsors, develop a dedicated website and order the airtime on 8TV (national television channel), during Sunday night, for broadcasting. On April 11, 2010, the first episode of the first season aired, and the final episode ended on July 4th of the same year. The drives are then updated for the second season, which spans between November 19, 2013 and December 17, 2013 respectively.
In 2010s, Paul Tan is a renowned businessman in Malaysia and a prominent figure in mainstream automotive media and automotive industry. Paul is currently managing director at Driven Communications Sdn. Bhd. He sometimes writes articles about paultan.org , but is no longer the exclusive website author, because the workload is currently being shared among his colleagues Danny Tan, Jonathan Lee, Matthew Hernandez Tong, Mick Chan , Anthony Lim, Gerard Lye, and Hafriz Shah respectively. Paul is also Director at Driven Technologies Sdn. Bhd. At one point between September 2011 and March 2012, he also became a Technical Leader on Planet Venus Sdn. Bhd., Company behind VenusBuzz.com .
In 2010, Paul has shifted the scope of paultan.org to cover the entire Southeast Asian region or ASEAN, where the website was previously focused primarily on the Malaysian automotive scene. Unlike most of Malaysia's main automotive media focusing on topics related to Malaysia, crews paultan.org are actively traveling to neighboring ASEAN countries to cover local developments, motor shows and car reviews in among others. Their efforts provide paultan.org of excellence in the sense that the website presents original content and news faster than other major automotive media in Malaysia. Paul also asserts that paultan.org will never compromise on content, independence, objectivity and credibility for additional revenue from advertisers, as crew appreciate their readers and their respective comments.
