Escort ZX2 (1997-2003)
The Escort version returned to the public in the spring of 1997 as a 1998 model, a coupe called ZX2. The name is believed to be derived from "Z" for the Zetec engine, "X" for Generation X whose car is marketed to and "2" for 2-door coupes. Ford gives the ZX2 a striking body style and a 2.0-liter 16-valve "Zetec" engine that pumps 130 horsepower and will move the ZX2 from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.4 seconds.
In 2001, Ford dropped the 2-door "Escort" name which would later be referred to as ZX2 ever since. The final year of production was in 2003. That year the ZX2 received a new front fascia, one year only 5-spoke 5-spoke wheels and, finally, in-dash versions of the deluxe and premium CD players. It also comes with a moonroof. Due to low sales and low demand, Ford lowered this vehicle from its ranks.
As the ZX2 uses the Mazda platform, its appearance brings a strong visual appearance to the Japanese market just Autozam Clef, derived from Mazda Cronos.

ZX2 S/R
The increased presence and success of the tuner models from abroad in the late 90s led Ford to create their own performance model, the ZX2 S/R. Means to compete with low-cost manufacturing compacts such as the Honda Civic Si or Dodge Neon ACR, Ford created the ZX2 S/R to indicate that the company has a lot of things to bring to the table. His first debut was at SEMA's Import Auto Salon at Pomona in 1999. The ZX2 S/R was the first product jointly developed by Ford Racing and Ford Motor Company's Small Vehicle Product Development Center.
The Ford final limits the production amount to 2,110 units, consisting of 110 S/R yellow in 1999, the first two being sold in Columbus, Ohio and 108 in Southern California, and in 2000 500 black, 500 red and 1,000 S/R yellow for the upgrade price of $ 1,495 second year. It is believed that only 35 of the 2000 S/R sold in Canada, making it very rare there.
The optional S/R package adds more rigid suspension parts (Eibach springs (M-5560-Z2), Tokico struts (M-18000-Z2) and the Suspension Suspension Polyurethane suspension bus), more power (via Ford Racing PCM M-12650-Z2)), more efficient intake (Roush or Iceman), rear disc brakes (M-2300-Z2), stronger clutch, Centerforce double friction (M-7560-Z2), B & m manual short-distance transmission shifter (M-7210-Z2), a unique S/R-shift knob (M-7213-Z2) and boot (M-7277-Z2), unique seat for 2000 models, unique blue valve cover for 2000 models, different speed clusters that go up to 150 mph (240 km/h) and unique tire/wheel packages with Goodyear ZR1 tires. Engine power increased 10% compared to the basic Zetec engine used in ZX2 to 143 bhp (107 kW, 145 PS), thanks to recommended premium fuel re-calibration, new air duct system, PCM performance, exhaust fix and Borla pipe (M- 5230-Z2). All ZX2 S/R has a special "S/R" badge on the back, either silver (on red car) or red (on yellow or black car). Some S/Rs come out from the assembly plant without some performance mods (example: Centerforce lost clutch).
