The series Honda ST , also known as Pan-European in Europe, is a Sport Touring motor duo consisting of the newer ST1100 and ST1300..

After the successful launch of the Gold Wing, Honda's marketing team considers that European markets (hence the "Pan European" moniker) will appreciate lighter, more sporty, and more maneuverable bikes. Introduced in 1990, ST1100 was given an inline 90-degree inboard V4 engine instead of a four-flat engine (as in the Gold Wing). The ST1100 acquires most of the other Gold Wing's engineering elemental elements, such as drive shafts, full fairing and integral panniers. Introduced to the European market a year before it is available in the United States, the ST1100 is provided in a sporty package of features needed by touring riders, thus filling a niche between the powerful and powerful Honda VFR750F and Gold Wing sports guides.

The successor, ST1300 , (also called "Pan-Europe" in Europe), introduced in 2002, became available in the US in 2003. Production continues into model year 2012. In November 2013, after ST1300 removal from the model line, Honda announced CTX1300 , a cruiser motorcycle powered by a modified ST1300 engine version for better fuel economy and improved torque at low RPM.

ST1100

The ST1100 has a 90-degree longitudinal V4 engine of 1,085 cc. The fuel tank is located beneath the saddle (the tank at the normal location is actually a cover for the air filter) to lower the center of gravity and thereby improve the handling. It was manufactured by Honda between 1990 and 2002. A police variant, the ST1100P, is available for several more years.

ST1100 is optimized for long-distance tours with the following features:

  • V-4 engine layout is elongated with a gray care drive shaft
  • Optional antilock brakes (ABS) and traction control systems (TCS). The ABS model from 1992 to 1995 has a conventional separate front and rear braking system. After 1996, the bike is equipped with ABS brakes are connected to the front-rear (LBS).
  • 28-liter fuel tank is very large (7.4 US gallons), giving a range of around 300 miles off the highway (480 km).
  • A 40 amp alternator, air-cooled are great for moving lots of accessories such as additional lighting and electrically heated clothing (early models have a 28 amp alternator with problems that can be upgraded to 40 amp)

Weighing about 290kg, the ST1100 is not lightweight. The motorcycle was fitted with a wing tipover protector projected from the bottom of the fairing. This will not only protect the bike and the cylinder head in a collision, but, if the rider lowers the bike on its side, it will prevent this very heavy bike from bending too far making it almost impossible to retrieve it; pannier also helps in this regard. The ST1100 rearview mirror is very effective.

ST1300

The ST1300 1.261 cc V4 engine has a five-speed cassette-type transmission and a two-element fuel tank. The engine forms a pressed member in a lighter aluminum frame, the layout provides a low center of gravity. Just as the ST1100 is being replaced, the ST1300 has a standard driving posture, a transparent liquid-cooled V4 engine with shaft drive and a fully faired body with an integrated hard pannier as standard.

During the 2000 bike festival season, Honda presented a prototype sports tourist called the X-Wing, featuring a 1,500 cc V6 engine, front and rear suspension one-sided and automatic transmission. Speculation in the press that the X-Wing was a substitute for the ST1100 was partially confirmed when Honda introduced the all-new ST1300 Pan Europe in Europe and Australia for the 2002 model year. For the US market, new bikes will be imported in limited quantities (about 2,200 per year) starting year 2003 as ST1300. Motor Cycle News reported in 2009 that Honda will replace the ST1300 with a new touring bike powered by a V4 engine mounted transversely, similar to the Honda VFR1200F layout. In 2011, Honda announced that the development of next-generation Pan-European motorcycles was suspended.

ST1300 incorporates many X-Wing lines but no equipment is running. Power comes from a low-powered 1200 cc V4 engine mounted as a distressed member in a lighter aluminum frame. The main difference from the ST1100 is the use of the balance shaft for smoothness, allowing the engine to be directly mounted onto the frame. The revised engine layout and fuel tank split shifting some of the weights down, making the ST1300 less heavy than its predecessor. The rear wheel is driven through a five-speed transmission and axle-type cassette-type.

ABS brakes and linked brakes Honda is the choice for all years at ST1300 in the United States, but is standard on the European ST1300 Pan Europe 2004 (model A4). Unlike the ST1100, the ST1300 does not include a traction control system. In 2002 and 2003, models with ABS included an electrically adjustable windshield. The electrically adjustable windshield became standard equipment on all motorcycles in 2004. The long list of minor differences improves ST1100 comfort, handling, and performance.

Pan weave

The evidence shows the ST1300 can show a mode of high-speed weave instability - known in the case of ST1300 as Pan Weave .

In April 2007, following the death of a police motorcycle rider riding a single seat ST1300, ST1300 emergency service version, the British coroner announced he would alert all Police Chiefs in England and Wales about a "serious threat" to the lives of motorists inflicted by ST1300 and " disastrous results "of high-speed weaving. The safety check then produced one examiner who suffered multiple fractures in a similar incident. British police forces then withdraw ST1300 from police services; Freewheelers EVS and London Ambulance Service continue to operate ST1300.

RiDE Magazine reported in October 2007 that the team replicated weaving instability mode with civil Honda ST1300 - reproduced instability at a speed of 110 miles per hour (180 km/h) under certain loading conditions. The rider sees the yaw wheel at a maximum of 11 degrees per second, described as "a consistent and worrying sideways movement." Editors name the behavior of "Pan weave". The purpose of the test is not to determine the cause of the weave, but to ascertain its existence. Also, the article reported that 43% of ST1300 owners surveyed had experienced weavers.

Honda Response

American Honda published an advisory in August 2007 on the proper selection, installation and use of equipment on ST1300PA police motorcycles. They made a strong recommendation to have "qualified personnel evaluate a motorcycle equipped with all equipment intended under the anticipated speed and conditions before the vehicle is in operation." The counsel also includes guidelines for selection and installation of attachments, including:

  • Place the equipment as low as possible and close to the center of the motorcycle;
  • avoid exceeding the maximum load limit for vehicles;
  • obey the weight limit for each saddlebag bag and fairing;
  • ensure equipment and equipment are balanced on both sides of the vehicle.

In 2010, ST1300PA was again popular in police departments in the UK and US, competing with police bikes from Harley-Davidson, BMW, Kawasaki, and Yamaha for price and performance. The Automobile Association and other groups providing roadside assistance or emergency services have also selected ST1300 for their motorcycle fleet since 2010.
