In 1987, the Honda Civic was significantly redesigned for the 1988 model. The suspension has a radical reconfiguration with a double wishbone suspension in front and independent suspension at the rear, the wheelbase is upgraded to 98.4 inches (250 cm), and the redesigned body with lines a lower hood and more glass, giving less drag. The front suspension incorporates an extended carrier hub, so the upper arm is relatively short. The rear suspension is a multi-link trailing arm suspension with upper and lower lateral control links (with a spring/silencer strut carried over the bottom link) near the axle and short lateral links for control of the foot in front of the main axle of the trailing arm.

Japanese

The fourth-generation Civic base model has SOHC 1.22, this single carburetor engine is not available for the Japanese and American markets. In Japan, the basic version receives a single 1.3 SOHC carburetor engine with 82 PS (60 kW), so equipped is called 23L or 23U. This machine, in the same condition, is also available in commercial version of Shuttle, sold only as "Honda Pro" at first.

Engine 1.5Ã, L SOHC comes in various models, dual point injection, single carburetive and dual carburation. The machines are available in the Japanese market 25X and 25XT. The Japanese version of Si sport, originally the top version, featured the 1.16L D16A8/A9 16V DOHC engine.

But there is more to come, and by the end of 1989 the new model of the hatchback is new SiR , equipped with 1.6 liters, 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) at 7,600 rpm DOHC VTEC "B16A". This, the first B engine, marks the introduction of Honda's variable valve timing and electronic lift control technology, or VTEC. By providing two different camshaft profiles - one for fuel economy, one for performance - the VTEC engine sets a revanced, natural aspirated precedent for future variants of Honda Civic performance. With its light weight, independent suspension and powerful engine, the car is well received globally, receiving the "Golden Steering Wheel Award" from the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, and ranked first in the French magazine l'i Automobile > 1989 survey on car quality and reliability. The European model, dubbed as "1.6i-VT", uses a slightly less powerful B16A1 engine, which has 8200 redline rpm and makes 150 PS (110 kW), although it makes the same 111 lbf (150 N). ? m) torque as the Japanese market B16. In Japan, the fully automated SiR Civic also receives low-powered engines.

The cart known in Japan as the Civic Shuttle, continued to be built until 1996. The commercial model used is called "Honda Pro"; it was replaced by a special commercial delivery van called Partner Honda starting with the 1996 model.

North America

All US vehicles are injected fuel.

In 1990, the Civic had a lightweight facelift. Some things that change is the front bumper design, the front corner lights no longer have two screws on the outside, the shape of the measurement cluster slightly changed, the tail unit tailor design changes, the side mold becomes thinner, and most Ciiva Americans receive automatic seat belts due to changes in federal highway safety law. The sedan and carts feature a supported automatic shoulder belt that is pulled from the b-pillar to a half-a-pillar position when the door opens, while the hatchback receives standard-style shoulders and lap belt mechanisms attached to the door and is intended to remain limp at all times. Although this arrangement meets federal regulations, the front door should be opened very wide to allow access between the belt and the seat. Many Civic owners use a door attached to the belt just as the pillars are mounted on the belt, buckling and unbuckling as necessary.

Model Available

STD

Basic model with lowest price and lowest standard (interior vinyl seats), instrumentation, engine output and transmission. It's only available as a Hatchback. Engine D15B1 16V SOHC, with dual port throttle body injection, 75 hp (55.9 kW) with restrictor on tandem valve, and catalytic converter integrated into exhaust manifold. Manual transmission is 4-speed with clutch-operated cable. Automatic four-speed transmission is also available.

DX

DX is available as a sedan or hachback. The DX sedan is basically the basic model of the sedan, because the sedan is not available on the STD trim. And unlike the LX, the DX sedan comes with a plain black bumper cover rather than a matching color bumper cover from the LX. The DX hatchback has a matching bumper cover. The seats are fabric in all DX Civics. All DX Civics feature the 92HP DPFI D15B2 engine, and become standard with a five-speed manual transmission. Four-speed automatic is optional.

LX

Available only as a Sedan, it has a higher level interior with a tachometer instrumentometer, electric windows, electric door locks, electric door mirrors, clock and wheel cover as standard. The engine is D15B2 16V SOHC, just like DX, with a 5-speed cable clutch transmission. 4-speed automatic transmission is optional.

EX

Available only as a Sedan for the 1990 and 1991 models, this is the top of the Civic line with all the standard features of the LX, and the 16H SOHC D16A6 engine with 4-point injection, generating 105 hp and 100 ft-lbs. It has also upgraded the brakes on the front with 10.3 "disk vs 9.5" on STD, DX, LX and SI models. 1991 has a higher steering rack - 3.1 change locks to lock vs. 4 for other and previous models.

SI

Initially, the Civic Si hatchback was absent from the lineup, with only CRX Si being offered for the 1988 model year. However, that changed, for 1989, and the Civic Si hatchback was reintroduced, along with a 3-hp upgrade for the D16 engine in all trim Si 108 hp, 1988 CR-X Si 105 hp). This is the most sporty Civic market, only available as a hatchback. The engine installed is a 16-valve D16A6 SOHC with 4-point injection and 108 hp output (81 kW). It weighs at 2.286 Â £ (1,037 kg), reaches a 0-60 mph factory of 8.1 seconds; and a quarter-mile time of 16.2 at 82 mph (132 km/h).

The main standard features of Si trim are roof/sun roof, tachometer, passenger door mirror, color matching bumper, dash clock, larger exhaust, front and rear anti-roll bars, 14 "steel wheels with cover, deeper bucket sports seats No power steering and no automatic transmission available (except in Canada) Additional options are air conditioning and fog lamps, as well as Honda Genuine Accessory different alloy wheels In other markets, D16A7 and D16A9 are more powered engines were used instead, which made 122 hp (91 kW) and 132 hp (98 kW) respectively.

Compared to previous generations, the Civic Si saw an improvement in handling, in part because of the double wishbone suspension in all four corners and lower wind resistance due to the leaner body shape. Like all other trims, the Civic Si received a slight visual improvement in late 1989, featuring revised bumpers and taillights.

Due to differences in engine output and potential modifications between American and JDM models, the second generation of the Si triggered a popular trend of machine exchanges, where the tuner would replace the D-series power plant with a stronger B-series motor.

Carts

It is available as FWD and RealTime4WD. The RT4WD version features MPFI D16A6 engine that is paired with a 6-speed manual (with the first super low gear left) or a 4-speed automatic transmission. FWD version featuring DPFI D15B2 engine paired with a 5 speed manual transmission or 4 speed automatic transmission. The RT4WD carriage has a white steel wheel with a matching center cap. The bodystyle remained in production until February 21, 1996, when it was replaced by Honda Orthia and professional use of Honda Partner, sold only in Japan.

All the weights listed in this table are lbs. Air Conditioning adds 49 pounds (22 kg). The cargo capacity is an additional £ 100 (45 kg) hatchback, a 75 pound sedan (34 kg).

Despite its image as an economical vehicle, the fourth generation hatchback became popular in the SCCA autocross competition. The ED chassis dominates the Street touring category, competing with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The 4th generation Civic hatchback became famous among Honda Civic fans due to its lightweight design and robust suspension layout.
