Histori

Leroy Grumman and others worked for Loening Aircraft Engineering Corporation in the 1920s, but when purchased by Keystone Aircraft Corporation and its operations moved from New York City to Bristol, Pennsylvania, Grumman and his colleagues (Edmund Ward Poor, William Schwendler, Jake Swirbul, and Clint Towl) started their own company at Cox-Klemin Aircraft Co plant in Baldwin on Long Island, New York. All of the early Grumman employees were former Loening employees. The company is named Grumman because he is his biggest investor.

The company filed as a business on December 5, 1929, and opened its doors on January 2, 1930. Staying busy with welding aluminum tubing for the truck frame, the company eagerly pursued a contract with the US Navy. Grumman designed the first practical float with a retractable landing gear for the Navy, and it launched Grumman into the aviation market. The first Grumman aircraft was also for the Navy, Grumman FF-1, biplane with landing retracted. This was followed by a number of other successful designs.

During World War II, Grumman became famous for his "Cats", Navy fighter, F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat, and the less famous Grumman F7F Tigercat and Grumman F8F Bearcat (no one saw the battle during World War II), and for the torpedo bomber TBF Avenger. Grumman ranked 22th among US companies in the value of wartime production contracts. The first Grumman jet aircraft is the F9F Panther; followed by enhanced F9F/F-9 Cougar, and the lesser known F-11 Tiger in the 1950s. The great postwar success of the company came in 1960 with A-6 Intruder and E-2 Hawkeye and in the 1970s with Grumman EA-6B Prowler and F-14 Tomcat. Grumman's products stand out in Top Gun movies and a number of Navy and Marine Corps aviation films. The US Navy still uses Hawkeye as part of Carrier Air Wings on aircraft carriers, and the US Marine Corps still operates Prowler in 2016.

Grumman is the chief contractor of the Apollo Lunar Module that landed mankind on the moon. The Company accepted the contract on 7 November 1962, and built 13 month modules. When the Apollo program approached the end, Grumman was one of the main contenders for the contract to design and build the Space Shuttle, but lost to Rockwell International. The company was eventually involved in the space shuttle program, as a subcontractor to Rockwell, providing wing and vertical stabilizers.

In 1969 the company changed its name to Grumman Aerospace Corporation , and in 1978, it sold the Grumman-American Division to Gulfstream Aerospace. The company built Grumman Long Life Vehicle (LLV), a light lighter truck designed for and used by the United States Postal Service. LLV started operations in 1986.

Grumman is responsible for a successful line of business including the Gulfstream I turboprop (Grumman G-159) model and the Gulfstream II business jet (Grumman model G-1159) operated by companies and individuals and by government agencies including various military and NASA entities. In addition, Gulfstream I propjet is operated by several commuter/regional airlines in scheduled passenger service and includes a stretched version, becoming Gulfstream I-C (Grumman model G-159C) which can carry 37 passengers. The Gulfstream business jet continues to be produced by Gulfstream Aerospace, a subsidiary of General Dynamics.

Long Island Location

During most of the Cold War period, Grumman was the largest corporate corporation on Long Island. The Grumman product is considered to be very reliable and roughly made so that the company is often referred to as "Grumman Iron Works ".

As the company grew, it moved to the Stream Valley, New York, then Farmingdale, New York, finally to Bethpage, New York, with final testing and assembly at 6,000-acre (24 km 2 ) Armed Force Station The ocean in Calverton, New York, all located on Long Island. At its peak in 1986, it employed 23,000 people on Long Island and occupied 6,000,000 square feet (560,000 m 2 ) in structure at 105 acres (0.42 km 2 ) leased from the US Navy at Bethpage.

The end of the Cold War in the early 1990s reduced defense spending and caused a wave of mergers as aerospace companies shrank in numbers; in 1994 Northrop bought Grumman for $ 2.1 billion to form Northrop Grumman, after Northrop was awarded $ 1.9 billion from Martin Marietta.
