History

The cultural success of indigenous peoples has been living in the area for thousands of years. At the time of European contact, bands from Lenape (Delaware) nation occupied West Long Island, New York and New Jersey districts around the harbor, and along the coast through Pennsylvania and Delaware at this time, as well as along the Delaware River. They speak Algonquian. In 1600 the band that inhabited the local area was called Matinecock after their location.

Glen Cove was used as a harbor by British migrants from New England and was named "Moscheto" before 1668. On May 24, 1668 Joseph Carpenter of Warwick, Rhode Island purchased about 2,000 acres (8.1Ã, km 2 ) soil to northwest Oyster Bay City from Matinecock. Later that year he recognized four Oyster Bay residents as partners in the project: brothers Nathaniel, Daniel, and Robert Coles, and Nicholas Simkins. The five young men named the settlement of Musketa Cove Plantation, "musketa" meaning "a hasty place" in the language of Lenape.

19th century

In the 1830s, steamers began regular service on Long Island Sound between New York City and Musketa Cove, arriving at a point still called "The Landing." Since "Musketa" was negatively associated with mosquitoes, in 1834 the villagers changed their name to Glen Cove; this is said to be taken from the wrong suggestion of "Glencoe," which means Glencoe, Scotland. The village added a population when workers arrived for work at the Corn Pati Duryea factory, which operated until 1900. The name "Duryea" was once proposed as the village name to replace the Mosquito Cove but was rejected.

By 1850, the village of Glen Cove had become a popular summer resort community for New York City residents. Long Island Rail Road expanded to Glen Cove in 1867, providing faster and more frequent services to New York City. The availability of trains and city locations on Long Island Sound makes it attractive to residents throughout the year, and the population increases. On June 8, 1917, Glen Cove became an independent town, breaking away from Oyster Bay City after 250 years.

The landscape of Long Island Sound from the city's hills attracted 19th century rich industrial barons, including Charles Pratt and his sons, and J. P. Morgan, and F. W. Woolworth. They built a large private plantation along the North Coast of the island. This steady wealth is part of what would be known in 1920 as the Gold Coast of Nassau County. Part of the Morgan property was donated to the city and is now operated as Morgan Park and Beach.

20th century

Most of the mansions were adapted for other purposes before the mid-20th century. Winfield Hall, former home of F.W. Woolworth, is privately owned. In all, five Pratt families have about 5,000 hectares (20 km 2 ) in the area. John T. Pratt's estate ("The Manor," designed by Charles A. Platt) is now operated as the Glen Cove Mansion Hotel and Conference Center.

The Braes, the state land of his son Herbert L. Pratt, was purchased by the Webb Institute in 1945. After renovation, the facility opened in 1947 as a specialized college founded for naval architecture and engineering.

Estate George DuPont Pratt, Killenworth, was bought by the Soviet Union government for use by the United Nations delegation. Russia has been using it for decades to accommodate visitors and as a weekend retreat for its UN staff. When in the United States for a meeting at the United Nations, both Nikita Khrushchev, the prime minister of the Soviet Union, and Fidel Castro, then Cuban president, separately live in Killenworth.

Like many other suburbs, Glen Cove grew rapidly in populations after World War II, when new housing construction was completed which replaced grasslands and farms with subdivisions. Many inhabitants of second and third generation descendants of immigrants of eastern and southern Europe, and have moved from childhood homes in Queens or Brooklyn. Some African-Americans are descendants of slaves from the colonial period, because the colony has used slaves for domestic servants and peasants; the other is a descendant of migrants from the South who came to New York City and the area during the Great Migration of the first half of the 20th century.

At the end of the 20th century, immigrants to the city generally came from Latin America and East Asia. Sikh gurdwara founded in Glen Cove attracts members of the Indian ethnic population in the area.

The US Post Office at Glen Cove, built in 1932 during the Great Depression, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The Courthouse, former town court and town hall and police were later added to the NRHP in 1990. It has been renovated and adapted for use as the North Shore Historical Museum. Old Glen Cove Post Office at Glen Street is registered with NRHP in 2010; now used as an office architect.
