The 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series is the 21st season of the IndyCar Series and the 105th season of American open wheel races. This includes the 100th run of the Indianapolis 500. Scott Dixon enters the ruling General Champion, while Chevrolet enters the season as the ruling Producer Champion. After the season ends, Simon Pagenaud is crowned as' Champion General Racer, while Chevrolet maintains the Manufacturing Championship. Simon Pagenaud was the first European driver to win an IndyCar Series driver's title since British rider Dario Franchitti in the 2011 season.

- Bryan Clauson runs Indianapolis 500 for the third time for Jonathan Byrd's Racing. Clauson will try to race in over 200 races in 2016 among IndyCar, sprint and midget cars. Ryan Hunter-Reay, Carlos MuÃÆ' à ± oz and Marco Andretti signed a contract with Andretti Autosport for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The team confirmed Townsend Bell for the Indianapolis 500.
- Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing becomes Ed Carpenter Racing for the 2016 season. Both Josef Newgarden and Ed Carpenter remain with the team, with only Newgarden running the full schedule. The team confirmed J. R. Hildebrand for GP Indy and Indianapolis 500. ECR will add champion Indy Spencer Pigot Lights to drive No. 20 for a road/road course that starts in Detroit.
- Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing ran only one full-time car in 2016 with Graham Rahal, but ran Indy Light champion Spencer Pigot in three races (St. Petersburg, GP Indy, and Indianapolis 500).
- The Penske team returns with four drivers the same as the 2015 season.
- The Ganassi Racing chips keep Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, and Charlie Kimball, but both Sage Karam and SebastiÃÆ'án Saavedra return to the team. The team then confirmed former Manor Marussia rider Max Chilton, who rode part of Indy Lights schedule in 2015, as their fourth rider.
- Schmidt Peterson Motorsports confirms James Hinchcliffe's return to the team. Mikhail Aleshin returns to the team for the full season, replacing James Jakes. Oriol ServiÃÆ' encourages the entry of a third team at the Indianapolis 500 with support from Marotti Racing.
- The PIRTEK Murray team insists that the team will race the Indianapolis Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500 with racer Matthew Brabham. The team got support from KVSH Racing.
- KVSH Racing confirms the return of SÃÆ' à © bastien Bourdais with the team. Stefano Coletti is not back for the team. Stefan Wilson drove No. 25 for Indianapolis 500.
- Dale Coyne Racing insists that Conor Daly and Luca Filippi will be in full season. Pippa Mann returned to the team for the Indianapolis 500. The team confirmed Gabby Chaves for the Indianapolis Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500.
- A. J. Foyt Enterprises confirmed the return of Takuma Sato and Jack Hawksworth to the team. The team confirmed Alex Tagliani for the Indy Grand Prix and the Indianapolis 500.
- Dreyer & amp; Reinbold Racing reunited with Sage Karam for the Indianapolis 500.
- Lazier Partners Racing confirmed the return of Buddy Lazier to the Indianapolis 500.
- On February 18, Bryan Herta Autosport confirmed their alliance with fellow Honda Andretti Autosport team. The team ran out of Andretti stores in Indianapolis. Separately, due to sponsor defaults, the team can not maintain the 2014 Indy Lights Champion Gabby Chaves. The team will confirm former Caterham rider and Manor Racing Alexander Rossi to drive No.98 for the season.
- IndyCar announced on February 24, 2016, employed three races; former drivers Arie Luyendyk and Max Papis and longtime motorsport executive Dan Davis.
- On May 15, 2016, information revealed that Charlie Kimball would be using car number 42 rather than the usual 83 for the Indianapolis 500. It came as a promotion by Novo Nordisk and Chip Ganassi Racing which also involved Kyle Larson and Ganassi of NASCAR Team. The official announcement came May 16, 2016 On June 12, 2016, Josef Newgarden suffered a broken bone and a fractured wrist in an accident during Firestone 600. Ed Carpenter Racing announced the following day that J. R. Hildebrand would replace Newgarden until he recovered from his injuries. However, Newgarden recovered sufficiently from his injuries so he was able to compete in the next race at Road America.
- On July 21, 2016, Dale Coyne Racing announced that R.C. Enerson will make his IndyCar introduction to the team in Mid-Ohio. The team then signed Enerson to drive the last two races of the season.
