The Rose Parade , also known as Tournament of Roses Parade , is part of the "New Year's Celebration of America" ââheld in Pasadena, California each year on New Year's Day (or on Monday, January 2, if New Year's Day falls on a Sunday). This parade includes flower floats, marching bands, and equestrian units and is followed by a Rose Bowl college football game. It was produced by the non-profit Pasadena Rose Association Tournament.
Originally started on January 1, 1890, the Rose Parade was watched directly by hundreds of thousands of spectators on the parade route, and aired on several television networks in the United States. It is seen by millions of people on television around the world in more than 100 regions and international countries. The Rose Bowl is a college football game that was added in 1902 to help fund the cost of staging the parade. Since 2011, the parade has been sponsored by Honda. Thus, the company has the first float parade, which is like all floats, following the parade theme.
Rose Parade 2018 features 44 buoys, 20 riding units with around 400 horses, and 21 marching bands. The theme of the 129th Rose Parade is "Making a Difference" and Grand Marshal from the parade is Gary Sinise.

Histori
Members of the Pasadena Valley Hunt Club first held a parade in 1890. Since then the parade was held in Pasadena every New Year, except on January 1st falling on Sunday. In this case, it was held on the following Monday, January 2nd. The exceptions were made in 1893, because the organizers did not want to disturb the horses that were installed outside the Sunday services.
Many members of the Lembah Hunt Club are former residents of East and Midwest America. They want to show off their new winter weather in California. At a club meeting, Professor Charles F. Holder announced, "In New York, people are buried in the snow, where our flowers are blooming and our oranges will hold, let's have a festival to tell the world about our heaven."
So the club arranged a flower-covered horse carriage, followed by foot races, polo matches and mine tugs in the city that drew a crowd of 2,000 people to the event. After seeing a number of flowers on display, the professor decided to suggest the name "Rose Tournament".
Over the next few years of founding, marching bands and motor vehicles were added. In 1895, the event was too big to be tackled by the Hunt Club Valley, so the Pasadena Rose Tournament Association was formed. In the 11th annual tournament (1900), the city where the event was renamed Tournament Park, a large open area directly adjacent to Pastena's renowned higher education institution, Caltech. Immediate activities include an ostrich race, a forest horse deforestation demonstration, and a strange new race between camels and elephants. (Elephants win the race.) Immediately review the stands built along the parade route and newspapers in the city of Eastern Seaboard began to pay attention to the event.
Renaissance William Wrigley Jr. (maker of Wrigley gum) was offered to the city of Pasadena after the death of Mrs. Wrigley in 1958, under the condition that their home would become the permanent headquarters of Rose Parade. The House Tournament is the name given by the former home where the organization is headquartered.
The first related football match was played on 1 January 1902. Originally titled "East-West football tournament," was considered the first Rose Bowl. The next game was not played until the 1916 New Year; they have been played every year since then. The game earned its modern name from the Rose Bowl Stadium, built for the 1923 game.
In 2002 and 2006 (when the Rose Bowl Game was a BCS National Championship Game), "Granddaddy of 'em all" was not held on the same day as the parade; The 2006 match was played on 4 January. Not all fans are happy with the change; some thought the atmosphere and tradition of the Rose Bowl disappear. After the BCS game title is separated from the host bowl, it no longer affects the date of the Rose Bowl Game (even when the title game goes back to Pasadena in 2010 and 2014).

Parade
The Tournament of Roses Parade has followed the same route especially after Colorado Boulevard (Pasadena's main highway and segment of US 66) for decades. The day before the parade, the whole neighborhood from the neighborhood streets in the southern intersection of Orange Grove and Colorado Blvds. sealed and provided for the escort of dozens of buoys, bands, horse riders, and other elements. This staging area is referred to as the "Establishment Area" and is managed by the Establishment Area Committee.
In the morning the parade of various elements was combined and sent in front of the Tournament House. The march begins north on South Orange Grove Boulevard from Green Street. At Colorado Boulevard, he passes the main tribune (and major television and media stations) and sails east on Colorado Boulevard. The parade then turned north on the Sierra Madre Boulevard. The floats then have to travel under the Sierra Madre Boulevard/I-210 overpass, requiring over-high floats to reduce their altitude. The march ended at Paloma Street near Victory Park and Pasadena High School. The float continues into the post-parade viewing area (which opens that afternoon and the next day). The total route is 5.5 miles (8.9 km) long; bands assembled, horse units and buoys take about two hours to pass.

New participants are the Los Angeles Lakers, City Irvine Chamber of Commerce, South Dakota Tourism, California Milk Advisory Board, PBS (featuring Downton Abbey), and Union Bank. This marked the end of the participation of Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards in a parade for local television station KTLA. Float Singpoli Group "Marco Polo East Meets West", built by float maker Paradiso is rated as the lottery winner, "The most beautiful entry in the Parade with outstanding presentation and flower design."
Float
Initially the parade featured a horse-drawn carriage. Over time, buoys built by volunteers from the sponsoring community replaced the carriages. Today it is mostly built by professional float building companies and takes almost a year to build. Some community and sponsor organizations still rely on volunteers. The Valley Hunt Club still enters the flower-decorated carriage. Cal Poly Rose Float University still relies entirely on students who volunteer. Floats driven themselves on a truck chassis (commonly used) are different from Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade using trailer-based buoys pulled by a new, intact truck (provided by the sponsor).
Usually 48 to 72 hours before the day of the parade, one can see some buoys decorated with a flower coat in various 'granary buoys' located in the Arroyo Seco/Rose Bowl area of ââWest Pasadena, not far from the beginning of the parade. It is a parade rule that all floating framework surfaces should be covered in natural materials (such as flowers, plants, seaweed, grains, bark, vegetables, or nuts, for example); furthermore, no artificial flowers or crops are permitted, or the ingredients can be artificially colored. Last-minute voluntary opportunities are usually available.
Float city of Anaheim at the Rose Parade 2008 includes the Stanley Cup that the Anaheim Ducks NHL has won last season, hoisted by player Brad May. (Because the rules state that the exterior of the decorative vehicle must exclusively use organic materials, ABC commentators speculate that the city is excluded to display the Cup.) Also, the Los Angeles Dodgers has a float in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the franchise in Los Angeles, with the Hall of Fame sportscasters Vin Scully and Jaime Jarrin as well as former players Steve Garvey, Fernando Valenzuela, Eric Karros, and Nomar Garciaparra.
The 2010 parade floats including the American Scout Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary, the Mexican Consulate General in Los Angeles in Mexico's two centuries celebration of independence, and "Safety Harbor Kids". The 2010 parade also features a 113 foot (34 m) float from Natural Balance Pet Foods Dick Van Patten, which sets the Guinness world record for the longest single-chamber buoy. The West Covina city rewards the "service and commitment of Tuskegee Airmen" with a buf entitled "Tuskegee Airmen - A Cut Above", featuring a large bald eagle, two World War II warriors of "Redtails" aircraft, and historical pictures of some of the pilots serving our country. The float won the Mayor's trophy as the city's most extraordinary entry - national or international, also floats Anaheim featuring the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game played at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, four former MLB All-Stars, Mark Langston pitchers, Chuck Finley , and Troy Percival, along with Bobby Grich's second baseman being on board.
Since January 1, 2012, falling on Sunday, tradition dictates that the parade will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012. The 2012 Rose Parade has 43 buoys, featuring LMU Hundred Years buoys, and the 100th Anniversary Girl Scout Anniversary float (titled "What Will You Do Today?" ). Float builder Fiesta Floats donate their services to the Women's Scout rides design, which is decorated by organizational volunteers (of all ages). Paramount Pictures also participates in the 2012 parade with the 100th anniversary of " 100 Years of Movie Magic" . Namco Bandai Games joins the march for the first time, commemorating the Power Rangers. Others are Microsoft Kinect ("You are a Controller" ) and Kit-Cat Klock ( "Timeless Fun for Everyone").
The floats compete for one of 24 awards selected by three judges each year. Judges floating in the 2013 parade were esteemed flower designers Shane Connolly, marketing executive and show producer Macy, Amy Kule, and Brian Sullivan, an executive at Descanso Park Southern California. Because Honda became the title sponsor, the buoys did not qualify to compete for awards.
After the floating parade was parked at the end of the parade route on the Sierra Madre Boulevard and Washington Boulevard, near Victory Park and on display for one and a half days (two and a half days when January 1 fell on Friday) after the parade. None of the floating riders or celebrities involved in the parade were present, and the animation feature on some buoys was not activated. Going into the viewing area is $ 13 and children are accepted free of charge.
Equestrians
From the beginning the horse has played the inside of the Rose Parade. Thousands of riders have traveled down Colorado Boulevard. "The Tournament riding family grew bigger and stronger every year for welcoming new equestrians who came to share the wonders of New Year's Day and appreciate the commitment to excellence and professionalism demonstrated by the equestrian units returning to the parade," according to the Rose Tournament.
Before the parade, "Equestfest" was held at the Los Angeles Riding Center to showcase the show by a talented equestrian team. Equestrian units that have taken part in "Equestfest" have included Clydesdales from the First Cavalry Division of the US Army Fort Hood, "Traveler" (USC mascot), Children and Children of Reel West, and the State Fire Brigade Association California. Bob Eubanks and Shawn Parr have served as broadcasters on "Equestfest."

Band
Top marching bands from around the world are invited. Many of the high school marching bands, along with college and marching band organizations participated.
Bands participating in the parade have also developed a tradition. For example, the Pasupena City College Lancer Marching Band always parades in Rose Parade, along with the Los Angeles Unified School District All City Honors Band Southern California, selected by the auditions of the previous fall. The Lancer Tournament of Roses Honor Band is a coveted position, and those selected are among the best student musicians in California. Nine high school trumpeter players, selected on the basis of their audition appearances, and the best snare drummer, selected as Herald Trumpet, who marched directly before the Queen Queen buoy and played rattling.
Marching University bands from two participating schools in the Rose Bowl are invited to line up in the parade. They usually accompany a float representing schools and conferences.
Bands that have long-term arrangements to be in the parade include:
- Official Roses Honor Band Tournament hosted by Pasadena City College consisting of college bands and gifted high school musicians from all over California (Rose Parade appearance 87 years 2016).
- The Los Angeles Unified School District All District Honor Band
- Salvation Army of Roses Marching Band Tournament consisting of local musicians and Salvation Army musicians (97th appearance in 2016)
- West Coast Composite Band of United States Marine Forces
In 1891, Monrovia Town Band was the first musical group to perform at Rose Parade. In 1998, the Washington Township High School Minutemen Marching Band from Sewell, New Jersey became the first band in the history of the Rose Parade to decorate the whole range with live flower, in accordance with floating parade decorating practices. From the neighboring city of Arcadia, Arcadia High School's Apache Marching Band and Colorgaurd have appeared for 15 years, returning every four years. Allen Eagle Escadrille of Allen, Texas has a record 780 members at the 2016 Rose Parade.
In addition to the parade, the bands participated in two days, three Bandfest performances at Jackie and Mack Robinson Stadium in Pasadena City College, usually on 29 and 30 December (30 and 31 December during a March 2 march). Twenty bands participated in the 2016 parade.
The Rose Parade
Shortly after the March march, the newly elected Roses Tournament President had the task of choosing a theme for the festivities to come. Most of the floating flowers in the parade are inspired by this theme.
On January 18, 2018, Gerald Freeny was confirmed as President of the Pasadena Rose Tournament Association. He announced that the theme for the 130th Rose Parade and the 105th Bowl Game was The Melody of Life . Parade and bowl games will be held on January 1, 2019. The Roses President's tournament will lead 14 members of the Executive Committee and 935 volunteer organization members for the coming year.
Grand Marshal
Grand Marshal of the parade is a position of honor chosen by the Tournament president. Many choose relationships with themes that are also chosen by the president.
The Grand Marshal 2018 is an Academy Award nominee and a respected Gary Sinise humanitarian. For the 2017 parade, Greg Louganis, Janet Evans and Allyson Felix served as marshals. Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns was chosen as Grand Marshal 2016.
The parade of 2015 Grand Marshal is Louis Zamperini. After his death on July 2, 2014, the Tournament announced that it "is committed to honoring him as Grand Marshal of the 2015 Rose Parade." During the march, USC mascot Traveler walks in its place, without a rider in honor of Zamperini.
Vin Scully was elected Grand Marshal from the 2014 parade and Rose Bowl Game. Earlier, President Sally Bixby named Jane Goodall as Grand Marshal for the 2013 parade, replacing J. R. Martinez, grand marshal 2012.
Star Network Food Paula Deen is Grand Marshal from the 2011 parade. Captain Chesley Sullenberger is Grand Marshal 2010 and actress Cloris Leachman serves as Grand Marshal 2009, the 10th female marshal in parade history. Mary Pickford was the first female Grand Marshal. Other Hollywood celebrities who appear as Grand Marshal are Leo Carrillo, Harold Lloyd, Walt Disney, John Wayne, and Bob Hope.

Rose Queen dan Royal Court
Every September, about 1,000 young women (and some young men) between the ages of 17 to 21 years, honorary interviews serve as members of the Royal Royal Tournament of Roses [1] . The Pasadena Tournament of Roses governs the election process to determine which larger younger Pasadena woman will have the honor of being crowned Queen of the Roses Tournament, otherwise known as "Rose Queen." In addition to one Rose Queen, six Rose Princesses will also be selected to form the Royal Court. Royal Court will then drive an ornamental vehicle specially designed at Rose Parade and will also lead the Rose Bowl Game. The Royal Court will also attend over a hundred events in the Southern California region as an ambassador of the Roses Tournament.
One Hill Tree and Chicago P.D. actress Sophia Bush was Rose Queen in 2000. 1997 Rose Princess Lisa Remillard is a newscaster with KUSI San Diego television station.

Attendance
Newer attendance rates followed by TV and presence prediction in brackets. Most of the estimates were made by the Tournament of Roses and Pasadena Police Department. A number of studies were conducted by Anderson School of Management at UCLA on the presence and economic impact to Southern California. The Los Angeles Times conducted a research in 1980 that said the actual presence in the parade was actually about 60% of what it claimed each year.
- 1890 - 2,000
- 2002 - 800.000 (1,000,000; drop blamed on 9/11.)
- 2004 - 1,000,000
- 2009 - 700,000 (Pasadena has 1,000,000 visitors during the parade week.)

The Rose Parade is broadcast on television on ABC, NBC, Univision (in Spanish), HGTV, Sky Link TV (in Mandarin and Cantonese), Hallmark Channel, RFD TV, and KTLA (the last three offer free-interrupt coverage, though KTLA continues repeat the whole day parade with ads). WGN-TV in Chicago brings uninterrupted coverage of KTLA in the 2009 parade (WGN and KTLA are both owned by Tribune Broadcasting, a subsidiary of the Tribune Media Company). Until 2005, the parade was also broadcast on CBS, and KTTV also broadcast a parade of radio stations from 1949 to 1995. ABC serves as the official announcer of the parade, and its current twin ESPN network features the Rose Bowl (previously aired on ABC).

Volunteers
Leadership
Every year, the newly elected President Roses Tournament is responsible for choosing this year's theme and grand marshal. Preparation and construction of theoretical flower floats begins after the theme is announced. The selection of marching bands has gone well except for the Rose Bowl Game college bands. In 2005, Libby Evans Wright was elected the first female president of the Association.
The Pasadena Tournament of Roses appointed former P. Scott Executives executive Scott McKibben as executive director in 2010, replacing John M. (Mitch) Dorger, who has served as CEO since 2000. On the 8th September, 2011, he resigned for personal reasons. Chief Operating Officer William B. Flinn was appointed as a temporary executive director. From 1 March 2012 to 2 January 2017, William B. Flinn took over the role of Executive Director. David Eads becomes Executive Director in 2017.
Operation and parade
The Tournament of Roses has become a major event that requires 65,000 hours of combined work each year, or the equivalent of about 7.42 years of combined labor. Fortunately for the Association, the group has 935 members, each assigned to one of 34 committees, and about 50 student ambassadors. Responsibilities include:
- Choose Parade participants
- Check and test buoys for safe and reliable operations
- Assemble the parade element
- Perform marches through the streets of Pasadena
- Leads visitors on New Year's Day
- Help the public and the media see parades
- Give a presentation about Tournaments to a community group
- The control element of the Rose Bowl Game (as well as the BCS National Championship Matches held in Pasadena)
During the Parade, many Tournament members are required to wear a white coat with a red tie, name tag, membership pin, and official tape. Therefore, volunteers are usually referred to as "White Tailors." In December of each year, a white vehicle fleet with a special "ToR" license plate is visible throughout the San Gabriel Valley. The use of these cars is currently donated by Honda America for use by high level Tournament members.
Every year, Eagle Scouts honorary troops from the San Gabriel Valley Council, (now GLAAC), and "The Tournament Troop" Golden Scout Award recipient from Arcadia Service Unit of the Los Angeles Boy Scout, are selected to carry banners along the route. Every year, over the last 35 years, more than 100 scouts have participated.
The Radio Tournament of Roses Radio Amateurs (TORRA) provided audio communication and video coordination for parade officials through the use of Amateur radio from 1968 to 2005. With over 300 radio operator ham in TORRA there are several radio ham sites along the route parade equipped with amateur television and 2 way ham radio. Some mobile units - including motorcycles and pedestrian units (creepie-peepies) provide video coverage. With modern technology and mobile phone services, TORRA is no longer needed.
Thousands more volunteers helped cover the buoys in the beautiful flowers and seed mixes during the "Deco weekend," December 26 - the day of the parade. Many of these come back year after year, some even camping nearby to help throughout the week.
Weather
For the 2006 Rose Parade Tournament on January 2 (always held on January 2 when January 1 falls on a Sunday) winds with gusts up to 45 mph (72 km/h) and five inches (130 mm) of rain in predicted Pasadena Territory.
