The Mini SUV , also called subcompact SUV or subcompact crossover , is a class of small sports vehicles with lengths below and about 4,200 mm (165.4 in ). The term usually consists of any vehicle smaller than a compact SUV in North American standardization, or any 4x4 with a supermini body in international standardization or based on a supermini platform (B-segment car in Europe).
The first mini SUV appeared in the 1990s and is an off-road vehicle built in a body-on-frame chassis, such as the Suzuki Samurai. Although some models today still use this concept, largely because of their off-road prowess and more manageable sizes on the road (for example, large SUVs may not fit in narrow sections of traces), modern mini SUVs are in unibody construction and only offers some off-road capabilities, thus falling into the crossover SUV category. Some even represent modern superminis with only bumper hinges and more ground clearance.
Mini Countryman and Nissan Juke have started the trend of modern mini SUVs based on unibody construction since the early 2010s.
In Japan, because cars with a length of 3,400 mm (133.9 inches) are classified as car cars and are taxing lower; some manufacturers build this car with off-road display (like Mitsubishi Pajero Mini).
