The CB450 has a typical chrome-lined fuel tank, and shares the 'family' Honda styling found elsewhere on the S90 and CD175. Early models are known as 'Black Bomber', or 'Dragon', but in Canada the K1 model is marketed as 'Hellcat'.

The Mk.I 'Black Bomber' was first shown in England during the Diamond Jubilee Brighton Speed Trials in September 1965, traditionally held along the seaside. This new bike is imported and the engine is not running, but in a semi-competition demonstration sprint, the CB450, driven by Allan Robinson, MBE (Honda staff member), reaches a stand-alone 30km time and terminal speed of 100 mph (160 km/hour). After that, CB450 is exhibited at a motorcycle exhibition at the Brighton Metropole Hotel exhibition center.

In December 1965, the British Motor Cycle magazine reported that British sales were planned from February 1966, the price of Ã, £ 360 representing a cost equivalent to conventional twin-engine 600cc pushrod conventional twincc.

In a further publicity event, Honda (UK) entered Mike Hailwood as one of the riders within the 500 miles production race at Brands Hatch during July 1966. However, Hailwood was able to complete only a few demonstrations. rounds on the CB450 before the race started, having been banned from competing in the 500cc category, because the FIM had assumed that it "can not be classified as a production machine because it has two overhead camshafts"!

Although the sales of CB450 never matched Honda's expectations, this bike had excellent techniques for the time, including reliable electrical components, electric starters, and horizontally separated crankcase, all the different features of current British twins. A radical feature is a radiating valve: instead of a conventional coil springs, it is used 'torque rod' - a rotating steel rod to provide a spring effect.

The four-speed K0 model is updated in the K1 model manufactured from 1968 with a redesigned fuel tank, a rubber front fork instead of a shear metal sheath, a five-speed gearbox and twin speedometer and a rev-counter instrument mounted on top of the headlamp.

Subsequent developments evolved through a series of 'K' models with various improvements and stylistic changes including front disc brakes, continuing into K7 versions in some markets, until the introduction of the CB500T in 1975.

The base engine has been modified and installed in the exported Honda N360 and N600 cars, a precursor to the Honda Civic.
