Plot

Tim Dingman (Ben Stiller) and Nick Vanderpark (Jack Black) are good friends, neighbors, and co-workers at 3M. Nick constantly comes up with crazy ideas to get rich quickly, and when he creates Vapoorize, a spray that instantly wipes dog shit, he really does work. Because Nick's wealth continues to increase, so does Tim's jealousy, because he initially scoffs at the idea and wastes the opportunity to invest and become rich. Nick was unaware of Tim's jealousy, and his generosity only made Tim more jealous of him. Meanwhile, Nick Natalie's wife (Amy Poehler) decides to run for state senate but is constantly harassed by questions about her husband's product.

After Tim's wife, Debbie (Rachel Weisz) and the children temporarily left and she was fired from 3M, Team's jealousy reached a new level. In a bar, he meets J-Man (Christopher Walken), a strange traveler, who lends sympathetic ear and offers advice. After a drunken night Tim unintentionally killed Nick's favorite horse, Corky, and buried the horse in the pool he left behind.

Nick offers a $ 50,000 reward to restore his horse. J-Man and Tim devise a plan in which J-Man will find the horse and claim the prize, share the results. But a series of unfortunate events, including Tim's family hiding in J-Man's mountain cabin, caused the dead horse to disappear in a rainstorm.

Nick revealed to Tim that he would go to Rome to debut Vapoorize there, and gave Tim a chance to join him in a 50-50 partnership, which he received. J-Man finds that Tim is now rich, and, feeling betrayed, tries to blackmail him. After confessing to his wife, now enjoying his rich lifestyle, Tim agrees to pay J-Man; However, J-Man raised his demands and asked to become Tim's partner. The team accidentally shot him in the back with an arrow and J-Man, believing that Tim had tried to kill him, backed away in fear.

The team finally admitted all to Nick who forgave him for being jealous and agreed to continue the partnership; However, at a press conference for Natalie's election campaign (in which she promised to lift her nomination if Vapoorize proved harmful to the environment in any way), Corky's body was seen floating in the nearby river. The post-mortem animal reveals that the horse was not killed by an arrow as previously thought but was actually poisoned by a by-product of Vapoorize, used by Tim to care for his garden after Corky came to eat an apple from his tree. The veterinarian informs the couple that he is obliged to notify the Environmental Protection Agency, and Vapoorize is immediately withdrawn from the market. Nick and Tim almost lost all their wealth and glory, until Tim emerged with his own invention: Pocket Flan, inspired by Nick's family love for dessert. J-Man is featured in Tim's audience and Nick's infomercial for Pocket Flan, apparently reconciled.

Reception

Envy received generally negative reviews of criticism. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an 8% approval rating based on 117 reviews with an average rating of 3.1/10. The critical consensus of the site reads, "Jack Black and Ben Stiller failed to blackmail laughter from a script that is essentially an extended dirt joke." At Metacritic, the film has a score of 31 out of 100 based on 30 critics, showing "generally poor reviews". Viewers surveyed by CinemaScore gave this movie an average value of "D" on a scale A to F.

The film has been shot almost two years before its release, and is in immediate danger to video in the US due to a poor audience response during the test run. It was just because of the success of 2003 School of Rock starring Jack Black who finally got theatrical release. Nevertheless, the film performed poorly in US cinemas, so much so that it was released live-to-video in several European countries and Australia.

The film was nominated for the Razzie Award for the Worst Actor (Stiller), but lost to Fahrenheit 9/11 (George W. Bush).
