Fordham (also known as Fordham-East 190th Street ) is a Metro-North Railroad station serving the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. Located in Harlem and New Haven Lines, the station is 8.9 miles (14.3 km) from Grand Central Terminal. The platform is located just below the road surface and has two expanded side platforms, each serving eight cars, on an outer track. The station building is on a rail at Fordham Road (East 190th Street), and still bears the name of the New York Central Railroad on its facade. This station is one of the busiest train stations in the Bronx.

History

The New York and Harlem Railroad tracked through Fordham as far back as 1841, and the station was known to have existed shortly thereafter. New York and Harlem were purchased by New York Central and Hudson River Railroad in 1864. The March 17, 1848 Agreement gave New York and New Haven Railroad trackage rights over NY & amp; H from Williamsbridge to south to New York City. NY & amp; NH was merged with Hartford and New Haven Railroad to form New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1872, and trackage rights throughout the Harlem Division remained intact. This line aspect proved to be of little importance to the station until the next century. Throughout the late 19th century, the Harlem Division was expanded and rebuilt into an open cut line as part of a class elimination project, and Fordham Station was one of the few in the Bronx rebuilt with a station house on a bridge over all four. tracks, including Melrose, a former Morrisania and Tremont station. The reconstruction of Harlem Line in this area leads to the creation of Fordham Plaza.

Two major milestones of the early 20th century brought an increase in the number of passengers to the station. The Metropolitan Elevated Railway (later acquired by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company) extended the Third Avenue Elevated Line to Fordham Station, carrying a fast transit connection on July 1, 1901. The Pelham Avenue station was the north end of the line until it was extended to the Bronx Park Terminal ten months later. As a result, Third Avenue Railway also started operating from Fordham Plaza turning it into a major transit center to this day. Due to the popularity of football games between Fordham Rams and Yale Bulldogs in the 1920s, the combined services between New York Central Railroad and New York, New Haven and Hartford were moved from Woodlawn station to Fordham, where it remained.

Like other NYC stations in the Bronx, the station became Penn Central station after NYC & amp; Pennsylvania Railroads merged in 1968. Penn Central acquired New Haven Railroad in 1969, thus turning the station into a full Penn Central station. However, due to serious financial difficulties on the railroad after the merger, the commuter service was handed over to the Metropolitan Transport Authority in 1972. To make matters worse, the relationship to Fordham Road - 190th Street station as well as the rest of the Third IRT Avenue Line was eliminated in 1973 , although the station still has massive transit connections in the form of Fordham Plaza. The railway station and railroads were delivered to Conrail in 1976, and eventually became part of the Metro-North Railroad MTA in 1983. Metro-North expanded the platform to handle longer trains in the 1990s, and moved lunch and business other locally operated from the station.

Major renovation to Fordham station was completed on November 22, 2016. The renovation room includes a new entrance leading directly to Webster Avenue and 193rd Street, a new permanent artwork, and a platform built north. The platform to the north extends from just under ten feet wide to nineteen feet wide. This is made possible by property acquisition from Fordham University. At the northern end of the platform to the south, a hill is mounted. Both platforms receive rehabilitated lifts, new LED lights, benches and new canopies, real-time information monitors, and public address systems.

Services

Most services are provided to Grand Central Terminal by local Harlem Line train to and from North White Plains. The train runs at least every half hour on weekdays and Saturdays, and every hour on Sundays. However, during the peak of the upside (out of the morning GCT and inbound night) via train to and from the South also serve this station. In the early mornings of the weekend and late at night, some local trains directly to/from the Southeast stop here as well.

This station is partly served by the New Haven Line off-peak line coming to/from Stamford, and several top trains. This is the only station in the Bronx that is served by the New Haven Line train every day (New Haven Line train serves directly Yankee Stadium, using Mott Haven wye, for some games). The Grand Central-bound train may stop at Fordham to evict passengers; The Stamford train may stop at Fordham to receive passengers, but passengers to/from Grand Central are required to take the Harlem Line. This is because of the Metro-North operation agreement with the Connecticut Transportation Department. This station is the country's busiest reverse-peak relation station.
